loanDepot.com, founded in 2010 by mortgage industry innovator Anthony Hsieh, has grown into one of the leading mortgage lenders in the U.S., focused on creating a seamless and straightforward mortgage experience for its customers. With a mission to exceed expectations through innovation, loanDepot has navigated a highly regulated and competitive industry by embracing cutting-edge technology and a people-first approach.
In April 2022, Albert Nicholson joined loanDepot as senior vice president and associate general counsel, stepping into a role that required navigating the legal complexities of the mortgage industry during a time of economic uncertainty following significant layoffs due to market conditions.
Nicholson’s role goes beyond typical legal responsibilities. He acts as a key strategic partner to the business, focusing on integrating legal strategies into loanDepot’s broader goals. His expertise in employment law and human resources management has been vital in shaping the company’s approach to compliance, risk mitigation, and innovation. One of Nicholson’s primary responsibilities is ensuring that the company remains compliant with the vast array of employment laws across the various states in which it operates while maintaining a fair and equitable workplace. His work includes overseeing the company’s labor and employment matters, from litigation and employee relations to resolving EEOC charges and wage and hour complaints.
”My work at loanDepot allows me to interact and collaborate with many people across the organization, thus allowing me to build trust and productive working relationships,” Nicholson tells Vanguard during an interview over the summer.
Enhancing employee safety
Nicholson’s leadership in the workplace violence prevention training initiative exemplifies his ability to bridge the gap between legal compliance and practical business needs. The project required him to work closely with the human resources, compliance, corporate security and risk management teams to design and implement a comprehensive workplace violence prevention plan and training program. The plan and training were tailored to meet regulatory requirements and cultivate a workplace culture of respect and safety. Nicholson’s guidance was critical in updating company policies to align with evolving legal standards around workplace conduct and safety. His focus on fostering open communication and ensuring employees are well-educated on these issues contributed to the project’s success. Through this initiative, loanDepot was able to meet its legal obligations and strengthen its commitment to employee well-being, creating a safer and more respectful work environment.
In addition, Nicholson played a pivotal role in shaping loanDepot’s trademark and patent strategy. Although the company already had a foundational approach to protecting its intellectual property, Nicholson saw the potential to align the strategy with its innovative drive better. By collaborating with various departments, Nicholson ensured that the legal framework supporting the company’s technological developments was robust and forward-thinking. His efforts extended beyond legal protections, as he focused on leveraging trademarks and patents to safeguard loanDepot’s competitive edge in the mortgage industry.
“This proactive approach to intellectual property mitigated risk and allowed the company to continuously evolve its offerings and embrace new technologies without fear of legal vulnerabilities,” Nicholson explains.
Attracting top talent
Nicholson has also played a crucial role in enhancing the company’s approach to recruiting and retention, mainly through his advice and counsel regarding employment agreements, bonuses, and compensation structures. loanDepot’s competitive recruiting process includes offering bonuses and guarantees to attract top talent, especially in sales roles. Nicholson oversees this process and manages the enforcement of agreements when employees leave before completing the terms, often partnering with collection agencies and external counsel to recover funds owed to the company. This work helps loanDepot maintain a strong talent pool and ensure accountability among its workforce.
His leadership extends to the company’s immigration practice, where he oversees the immigration process related to the hiring and retaining of foreign nationals, often for specialized technology positions.
Nicholson’s strategic approach to offering proactive employment solutions and compliance has made him an invaluable asset to loanDepot. His ability to balance risk mitigation with fostering a positive workplace culture has helped drive the company forward, ensuring that loanDepot continues to grow while maintaining its commitment to innovation and employee well-being. Through his leadership, Nicholson has strengthened the legal and operational frameworks supporting loanDepot’s mission to exceed customer and employee expectations.
From California roots to corporate success
Born and raised in Southern California, Nicholson earned an undergraduate degree from UCLA and laid his legal foundation at SMU Dedman School of Law, which paved the way for his diverse and successful career. He spent over eight years at Freedom Communications as senior director of legal and HR, gaining significant expertise in managing legal matters alongside human resources functions. Nicholson then transitioned to Ogletree Deakins as Of Counsel for nearly three years, further sharpening his legal skills, especially in employment law.
His next move was to Lineage Logistics, where he spent over five years playing a key role in the legal operations of the global logistics company. This experience broadened his expertise in corporate governance and compliance.
In April 2022, Nicholson became senior vice president and associate general counsel at loanDepot.com, a leading mortgage lender. His leadership responsibilities include mentoring younger professionals, something he finds highly fulfilling as he guides the next generation of legal talent.
Despite his demanding career, Nicholson values his downtime and looks forward to relaxing with his family. His journey, from his Southern California roots to senior leadership positions at major companies, reflects his dedication and ability to balance professional achievement with personal relaxation.
“Success isn’t just about personal wins; it’s about uplifting others along the way. As I grow in my career, I love mentoring the next generation and finding joy in balancing hard work and downtime,” Nicholson says.
