Chelsea Painter Fife didn’t grow up with connections or a career roadmap. She spent several years of her childhood in a small town in West Virginia in a trailer park where the struggles of her family hit close to home and opportunity felt far away. But from those humble beginnings—and by following the lead of her hardworking parents—she has built a career defined by tenacity, vision, and fearless leadership, rising to become the chief legal officer of 9Rooftops, a bold marketing agency known for blending creative edge with data-driven strategy.
Chelsea Painter Fife | 9Rooftops | Chief Legal Officer
Today, Fife leads not only legal matters but also plays a central role in shaping the company’s growth, operations, and global expansion. Her journey is not just one of personal success—it’s an inspiring blueprint for building something extraordinary from the ground up.
Based in Chicago with nine offices across the U.S., 9Rooftops is a culture-forward creative agency that disrupts the traditional agency model. They fuse data, design, and strategy to create bold, measurable campaigns. At the heart of this creative engine is a strategic legal function shaped by Fife, who ensures that innovation doesn’t outpace compliance.
Since joining 9Rooftops in 2022, Fife has transformed the company’s legal infrastructure. She inherited a fledgling system from the agency’s first in-house counsel and completely overhauled it. Alongside a trusted senior paralegal—whom she worked with at Southern Glazer’s—Fife has helped build a modern, responsive legal team within a lean framework.
“I thrive under pressure,” she says, describing her decision-making style. And that resilience has been instrumental, whether she’s advising on AI compliance, protecting intellectual property, or launching the company’s UK subsidiary.
“We’re performing well,” she adds. “The legal team is aligned with the company’s new vision, especially under our parent company’s new CEO.”
Roots that ground & fuel
Before her current role, Fife gained extensive experience in private practice at firms such as Nelson Mullins and Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, and then moved in-house to Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, where she spent over five years honing her legal acumen in a larger, tight-knit team environment. But the journey to get there was anything but typical.
Initially planning to become a veterinarian, a single fainting episode during a dog’s knee surgery redirected her career path. A brief and uninspiring stint as an accounting major followed before she pivoted again—this time to international business. Eventually, her passion for debate and problem-solving led her to law school at the University of Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School of Law.
Getting there required grit.
“I didn’t know an attorney until the summer before I started law school,” Fife recalls. “I had no connections to the profession. I just figured it out.”
And she did, winning a spot in a summer associate program that helped offset the cost of out-of-state tuition—a make-or-break opportunity that propelled her forward.
Fife, a first-generation college graduate in her family, still remembers what it felt like to walk into law school surrounded by peers whose parents were doctors and lawyers or otherwise had a background dissimilar to her family’s relatively blue-collar background.
“They had different stresses,” she says, “but I knew how to hustle.”
That grit is what continues to define her. Whether it was getting her first “B” in law school and questioning everything or learning to trust her instincts when high-stakes legal questions land on her desk, Fife knows how to adapt, solve, and lead.
Leadership with empathy & edge
Fife’s leadership philosophy is deeply shaped by her upbringing. Having lived through instability, she now leads with a grounded and empathetic approach that prioritizes effective communication and resilience.
“I use my background as fuel,” she says. “I want to be the kind of leader that remembers what it’s like to not know anyone in the room, to have to learn everything the hard way.”
Her approach is people-first but pragmatic. She doesn’t pretend to know everything and leans on external counsel when necessary, while still owning tough decisions.
“I’m always happy to make the call,” she says. “But I still have mentors, and I still learn.”
One of those mentors is her former boss at Southern Glazer’s—someone she credits with helping shape her professional confidence. Another is a female attorney from her early days at the law firm who guided her through the intricacies of healthcare law. That spirit of mentorship now fuels her own efforts to pay it forward.
“I love mentoring women,” Fife says, “but I’ve also mentored men—some older than me, but less experienced. I enjoy helping people break into this world, especially when they don’t have a map.”
Her coaching often includes strategic networking tips, resume reviews, and practical advice on breaking into in-house roles.
“It’s all about the people you know and the experience you get,” she tells mentees. And with a legal career built on those very principles, Fife is living proof.
The future of legal & marketing, together
At 9Rooftops, Fife is helping usher in a new era—one where legal strategy doesn’t stifle creativity but rather enables it. Her perspective on AI captures that balance.
“We love AI at 9Rooftops,” she says. “But there are scary things when it comes to compliance and copyright.”
Fife uses AI tools cautiously, understanding their benefits while remaining clear-eyed about their limits.
“AI won’t replace lawyers,” she says. “It might help with document review, but it’s not replacing judgment or accountability.”
As 9Rooftops prepares to unveil new branding and continues expanding globally, Fife is right at the center of it all—helping the business push boundaries safely and smartly. She speaks daily with the president, participates in strategic planning, and ensures the company’s core values—creativity, culture, and boldness—are anchored in legal stewardship.
And outside of work, she finds balance raising chickens and spending time with her family—proof that the hustle doesn’t erase the joy. It adds to it.
From West Virginia roots to an international legal role, Fife’s path is a testament to perseverance and purpose. In an industry where leadership is often inherited, she’s built her own ladder—and now, she’s helping others climb it.
“Instead of a can-do attitude, I have a willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done,” Fife explains. “No matter how menial or tedious, my will-do attitude is a big reason for my successful career.”
