Christina Paulson’s professional journey has never followed a straight line. Growing up inspired by her grandfather and fascinated by interviews with judges, she once imagined herself sitting on the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court. That ambition was set aside when she pursued medicine instead—majoring in biology, taking the MCAT, and preparing to enter Northwestern’s medical school. Yet on the eve of signing her financial aid paperwork, she felt an unease she couldn’t ignore. Medicine was not her calling.
Christina Paulson | EVERSANA | Assistant General Counsel
Instead of donning a white coat, Paulson chose law—a discipline that satisfied her love of logic, problem-solving, and the constant pursuit of knowledge. A fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Dr. Anthony Fauci’s lab confirmed that her strengths lay not in laboratory work but in complex reasoning and human connection. She enrolled at UCLA School of Law, where her interest initially leaned toward environmental law before shifting to the startup ecosystem.
Her first years in private practice focused on early-stage medical device companies. She guided them through financings, equity matters, M&A, and vendor contracts. What energized her most was seeing companies grow from inception to acquisition, and knowing her work helped make that growth possible. That sense of alignment between business purpose and patient impact would eventually lead her to EVERSANA.
Patient-centered support across the lifecycle
Founded with a mission to transform the patient journey, EVERSANA provides integrated solutions to life sciences companies, supporting therapies from development through commercialization. The company partners with startups and global pharmaceutical brands alike, offering services such as market access, patient engagement, distribution, regulatory guidance, and compliance support. EVERSANA stands apart in the industry because of its relentless focus on patient outcomes—particularly in the high-stakes world of rare and orphan diseases, where therapies can mean the difference between hope and despair.
By delivering an end-to-end suite of services, EVERSANA helps clients accelerate time to market, navigate regulatory complexity, and ensure treatments reach the patients who need them most. With approximately 6,000 employees across the U.S. and abroad, the organization has grown rapidly—absorbing multiple acquisitions, streamlining operations, and positioning itself for a potential IPO or future acquisition.
Paulson joined EVERSANA in July 2020, right as the company was scaling aggressively. She was only the second attorney on staff, yet her responsibilities were expansive: to build out the legal function, establish processes, and support a business model that was evolving almost daily.
“I didn’t step into a role with a playbook,” she says. “We had to create the playbook as we went, but that meant we could design a legal function that worked for the business—not against it.”
Building a legal department
Over the past four years, Paulson has taken EVERSANA’s legal team from a lean two-person operation to a scalable, trusted department with four direct reports—two attorneys and two specialists. In doing so, she has instilled a culture where legal isn’t viewed as a gatekeeper but as a business partner.
That partnership is visible in her involvement with EVERSANA’s “complete deals”—complex, multifaceted agreements that span everything from pre-approval planning to commercialization. These contracts often include performance-based structures, requiring legal to balance risk with opportunity. Paulson sees her role as helping the business move quickly while ensuring compliance and sustainability.
“Legal doesn’t just mitigate risk here,” she explains. “We enable revenue by joining client calls, showing compliance readiness, and helping win business.”
Her leadership style has been described as “an iron fist in a velvet glove.” She is transparent and responsive, while also striking a balance between empathy and accountability. Weekly team huddles—sometimes focused on legal matters, other times on favorite hair products or lighthearted topics—help build camaraderie across a fully remote team. Annual in-person gatherings strengthen bonds and reinforce the sense that, even without hallways or watercoolers, connection is possible.
Paulson also prioritizes mentorship. She makes it clear to her team that she sees their growth as part of her responsibility.
“I often tell them, ‘I expect you to move on because you’ve outgrown this role,’” she says.
That mindset, combined with regular check-ins, ensures her team feels supported not just as professionals but as individuals navigating career paths.
The challenges of remote leadership are real—gauging stress levels through a screen, ensuring people don’t burn out, and trusting self-starters to manage their time. Yet Paulson has found that the flexibility also allows her and her colleagues to balance professional excellence with family life. For her, working from home makes it easier to be present for her young children, even while managing the daily operations of a busy legal department.
Navigating AI
One of the most exciting—and challenging—developments in Paulson’s role has been EVERSANA’s embrace of artificial intelligence. She and her team were early adopters, recognizing both the potential and the pitfalls.
The legal department led the formation of EVERSANA’s AI council, drafting guidelines and vetting tools for enterprise use. They implemented an AI-powered contract management system, hired a legal operations specialist who doubles as an AI subject-matter expert, and established “trust but verify” practices to ensure human oversight.
“I love AI—I find it a very helpful tool,” Paulson says. “But we’re always skeptical in the right ways. Human judgment will always be in the loop.”
The legal team now reviews and tests AI applications across the company, from Copilot for enterprise productivity to specialized contract analytics. Playbooks are continually updated as new AI capabilities emerge, and Paulson encourages resilience: “We keep tweaking, keep chipping away, until the technology truly supports the business.”
Her balanced approach—embracing innovation while demanding accountability—mirrors EVERSANA’s broader culture. The company sees AI not as a replacement for human expertise, but as an accelerator for efficiency, compliance, and patient impact.
Growth, readiness & patient impact
As EVERSANA contemplates its next phase—growth into new markets, transformative products, and the possibility of an IPO or acquisition—Paulson’s work sits at the heart of readiness. Legal processes must be scalable, compliance airtight, and contracts structured to withstand scrutiny.
The stakes are high, particularly in the world of rare diseases where therapies can cost millions but also save lives. For Paulson, that connection between her legal work and real patient outcomes is deeply motivating.
“Every deal, every contract, every policy—we know it ultimately contributes to improving someone’s life,” she says.
Her journey from aspiring doctor to legal leader at a life sciences powerhouse reflects her adaptability, empathy, and intellectual curiosity. At EVERSANA, she has built more than a legal department. She has built trust—between law and business, between compliance and opportunity, and ultimately between therapies and the patients they are designed to serve.
