That same philosophy is evident in the work of Chuck Almer, CS’s vice president and general counsel, who has guided the company’s legal operations since 2018. As the sole attorney on staff, with support from a strong paralegal and collaborative IT, HR, Finance, Trade Compliance, and other teams, Almer juggles legal challenges that span continents—from property matters in Pennsylvania,   , to manufacturing questions in Europe, to contract issues in Dubai,,  to employment questions in Mexico—all while building trust with business partners and safeguarding the company’s global vision.

Jumping right in

Almer’s legal career didn’t begin in-house.

After earning a degree in civil engineering from Lafayette College, he worked as a law clerk in New York City. At the same time, he attended Seton Hall University School of Law at night, after which he started as an attorney at a prominent Park Avenue patent law firm. The grueling pace and exposure to intellectual property law eventually led him to roles as assistant general counsel and senior counsel in the pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors.

“This is my fourth company,” Almer says. “Each one has been a different experience and taught me something new. However, one constant is that from day one, the work has to be done. You don’t always have time to ease into it—you jump in and figure it out.”

That mindset has served him well at CS, where the pace and issues are wide-ranging.

“It’s a company that continually strives to improve,” he notes, “but it also respects employees, customers, and our work.”

Almer joined the company as Associate General Counsel in early 2018, supporting a then-General Counsel who became focused more on business than legal matters.

“I was already handling almost all the legal work,” he says. “So, when I stepped into the General Counsel role, it was a continuation—my job didn’t really change. I already knew the business, and I already knew the team.”

A global job in a shifting world

Almer’s work is as broad as the company’s global footprint. From reviewing agreements and managing litigation to ensuring regulatory compliance and maintaining the company’s intellectual property portfolio, Almer handles legal questions worldwide.

“We have manufacturing in the U.S., Mexico, France, the UK—you name it,” he says. “Our customers are everywhere, and the legal questions are, too. Property issues, compliance, terms and conditions—it all comes through Legal.”

Recent years have brought increasing complexity to Almer’s work. In the United States, shifting regulatory landscapes—particularly around data privacy, export controls, and artificial intelligence—require constant vigilance.

“We wrote a strong AI policy last summer,” he says. “But it’s already evolving. You can’t just put in a policy and call it done.”

To keep pace, Almer partnered closely with the company’s IT team.

“They’ve been phenomenal,” he says. “They know what’s practical, compliant, and what will work across the business. It’s been a real team effort.”

Almer also oversees the company’s compliance training programs and welcomes meetings with internal teams to discuss relevant topics, such as the importance of trademarks, as much as possible in non-legalistic terms.

“We do a lot of training, including on FCPA and OFAC compliance,” he says. “Unlike in years past, the courses we use now are pretty good—more interactive, relatable, and entertaining.”

Even with decades of experience, Almer says he’s still learning new things all the time. CS was recently involved in a transaction in Texas, and there were so many little details involved, things you don’t necessarily learn in law school. It’s those real-world challenges that keep the job interesting, he says.

Anchored by family

Amid the high stakes and global pressures of his role, Almer stays grounded thanks to the steady support of his family, particularly his wife, Marie, to whom he’s been married for 35 years, and his two children and four grandchildren.

The stability of family life has helped Almer navigate career transitions and demanding roles with clarity and composure.

“At all my stops, it’s always been: jump in, do the work. And that’s only possible if you have people supporting you. I’m lucky in that way.”

It’s a theme he often reflects on—how people, more than policies or processes, shape the work experience.

“The people you work with are everything,” he says. “Here at CS, I’ve been very fortunate to work with our owners and fellow leaders who genuinely care. It’s a family-owned company, which is one of the reasons why CS appealed to me.”

That first impression came during a coffee meeting with the previous general counsel.

“We met at a Starbucks. I thought it would be 20 minutes—it ended up being almost three hours. I liked everyone I met so much. That made the decision to join CS very easy.”

Leading through mentorship & adaptability

Almer doesn’t just lead by example—he also mentors future legal professionals. He’s spearheaded a mentorship initiative at CS that gives aspiring law students a taste of the complexities of global business law. “He says it’s essential to help the next generation understand what this work really looks like—especially in an international context.

That mentorship focus is in keeping with Almer’s broader view of leadership: listening, adapting, and collaborating.

“There are many things we don’t know the answer to immediately,” he admits. “But I know we’ll figure them out. That mindset is key in an environment like this.”

While legal and business challenges continue to evolve, Almer’s calm and collected approach offers consistency.

“I get to do many different things, work with smart, professional people, and be part of something meaningful. That’s all you can ask for,” he says.
