“I began my professional career in real estate law, where I developed a strong eye for detail and a clear understanding of how transactions are structured from the beginning,” she explains.
Property acquisitions, leases, land registry issues, and title reviews not only grounded her in the mechanics of real estate but also laid the foundation for a career defined by careful analysis and precision.
Her transition into corporate practice broadened her perspective. Moving into international business law, she advised foreign investors entering Guatemala, particularly in mergers and acquisitions. This cross-border work taught her to balance diverse legal frameworks, manage complexity, and negotiate across cultures—skills that are indispensable in structured finance.
“It also taught me how to think critically, manage complex deals, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders,” Soto says.
Eventually, she made the decision to move in-house, seeking greater collaboration and the opportunity to influence strategy directly. At Banco G&T Continental, those early experiences converge. She now applies her combined knowledge of real estate, corporate, and international law to structure complex financing deals that shape the country’s future.
A pillar of Guatemalan finance
Founded 78 years ago, Banco G&T Continental has become one of Guatemala’s most established and respected financial institutions. The bank plays a critical role in supporting the country’s economic growth, offering a wide range of services including corporate banking, investment solutions, and structured finance. Known for its commitment to innovation, collaboration, and regulatory excellence, Banco G&T Continental has positioned itself as both a trusted partner to clients and a driver of development projects across Central America.
Soto is proud to be part of this legacy.
“As the bank continues to expand its investment portfolio and embrace new technologies, I see my role, and that of my legal department, evolving and adapting to the forward-thinking environment of the bank,” she says.
Her team works in step with commercial colleagues, ensuring that every transaction supports the bank’s long-term objectives while meeting client needs.
Structuring finance with strategy & creativity
Structured finance is rarely straightforward, and Soto thrives on its complexity. Each project presents a unique challenge, whether it involves syndicated loans, project finance, or transactions with foreign companies. For her, the satisfaction comes from designing tailored frameworks that balance creativity with compliance.
“What I find most rewarding is the opportunity to work on transactions that blend complexity, creativity, and meaningful impact for our clients and Banco G&T Continental,” she notes.
Structured finance requires more than technical knowledge—it demands innovation and adaptability.
For example, in transactions involving foreign companies, challenges often arise around jurisdictional issues and collateral enforcement. Many international clients hesitate to submit to Guatemalan law, but Soto works with foreign counsel to design hybrid solutions such as arbitration clauses with local enforcement.
“Overall, these challenges demand a cross-border approach, where collaboration with foreign legal counsel plays an important role in ensuring that the transaction is legally sound,” she says.
Soto emphasizes that structured finance is not just about legal safeguards; it’s also about trust and long-term relationships. She relies on early and transparent communication, engaging with both the bank’s teams and clients’ advisors to align expectations from the outset. By doing so, she ensures that transactions move smoothly while balancing client satisfaction with regulatory compliance.
“Ultimately, I believe that customer satisfaction and the bank’s interests are complementary goals,” she says.
Leadership, collaboration & the road ahead
Soto’s ability to manage high-pressure projects comes from discipline and organization. She begins each transaction by drafting a detailed term sheet, collaborates with commercial teams to set clear parameters, and uses comprehensive checklists to track progress. Regular communication with internal and external stakeholders keeps projects aligned, even under tight deadlines.
Her leadership extends to her team of three, who collaborate closely with the bank’s commercial divisions. Each member contributes according to their strengths, ensuring efficiency while fostering growth.
“Our role as legal advisors in structured finance and collaborating with the commercial teams goes far beyond drafting agreements,” Soto explains. “We see ourselves together with them as strategic partners, understanding business opportunities and contributing to the bank’s goals.”
Looking ahead, Soto envisions both personal and departmental growth. She anticipates expanding the Structured Finance Legal department as the bank’s portfolio grows, particularly in areas like infrastructure, energy, and sustainable development. She hopes to mentor the next generation of legal professionals, shaping a culture of excellence and collaboration. “Ultimately, I hope to be recognized not only for delivering results, but also for building a collaborative and high-performing team,” she says.
Balancing professional success & personal fulfillment
Amid the demands of her role, Soto makes it a priority to maintain balance. As a wife and mother of two children—ages 13 and 10—she has developed a system that allows her to be present both at work and at home. Clear boundaries, task prioritization, and delegation enable her to focus on high-stakes legal matters while still attending her children’s school events and tennis tournaments.
“I make it a point to be involved in my kids’ education and activities. Whether it’s helping with homework, attending school events, or simply having dinner together, those moments are non-negotiable for me,” she says.
Equally important is carving out time to recharge—reading, exercising, or enjoying quiet time with family and friends.
Her ability to balance these roles reflects the same discipline she brings to structured finance: careful planning, open communication, and a clear sense of priorities. Just as she helps Banco G&T Continental structure deals that are sustainable and strategic, she has built a personal life that sustains her professional success.
Soto’s journey from real estate law to structured finance at Banco G&T Continental illustrates how diverse experiences can converge into a powerful legal career. By blending technical expertise, cross-border collaboration, and a commitment to client relationships, she has become a strategic partner within one of Guatemala’s leading financial institutions. Her work ensures that complex financing projects not only comply with regulations but also deliver meaningful outcomes for clients and communities.
As the bank continues to grow and innovate, Soto stands ready to lead her team into the future—balancing precision with creativity, and strategy with empathy. In doing so, she embodies the very qualities that define Banco G&T Continental itself: resilience, innovation, and trust.
