Redefining leadership: Where law meets empathy

Some successful leaders climb the corporate ladder by meeting expectations; Danette Alfonso succeeds by redefining them.

Danette Alfonso – Lennar

Danette Alfonso | Lennar | Deputy General Counsel

As deputy general counsel for Lennar Corporation, one of the nation’s leading homebuilders, Alfonso brings a rare blend of legal acumen and human insight to her role.  Her leadership is rooted not in convention but resilience, shaped by personal challenges and an unwavering work ethic.

Founded in 1954 and headquartered in Miami, Lennar builds homes in 30 states and operates in more than 44 markets. It serves everyone from first-time homebuyers to multigenerational families, offering not just homes but comprehensive services through Lennar Mortgage and Lennar Title. The company’s commitment to quality, value, and integrity is mirrored in Alfonso’s work as both legal strategist and advocate.

“For nearly two decades at Lennar, Danette has utilized her legal knowledge, strategic thinking, and extensive experience in employment issues and dispute resolution to earn a reputation as a trusted counselor to Lennar’s business leaders and Human Resources Department,” says Mark Sustana, vice president, general counsel and secretary for Lennar Corporation. “Her dedication and talents allow everyone she interacts with at Lennar to achieve outstanding results as a team.”

Alfonso’s path to the legal profession did not begin in a classroom—it started at a desk, working as a legal secretary. A young single mother with a biology degree, she had set aside her plans for a medical career after becoming pregnant in college. Working in law offices helped her discover her affinity for the profession. Encouraged by friends and colleagues, she took the LSAT, earned a full scholarship to the University of Miami School of Law, and began her extraordinary ascent from legal assistant to deputy general counsel.

Her journey wasn’t just fueled by ambition – it was driven by necessity.

“I knew I had to be the top of my class because I had to provide for my son,” she says.

That son, Daniel, was later diagnosed with autism after years of misdiagnoses. Advocating for him while navigating the educational and medical systems became her second full-time job. When the Miami–Dade County school board failed to meet his needs, she took them to court and won, a rare feat at the time. The case was more than just a legal victory—it helped transform the trajectory of her son’s future. It has also contributed to certain classes and programs available to future students.

Leading with perspective & purpose

Alfonso brings more than legal expertise to her role as deputy general counsel at Lennar; she brings perspective forged through lived experience.

Overseeing litigation, labor and employment law, compliance, and dispute resolution, she’s mediated over 400 cases and helped launch the company’s employment alternative dispute resolution program. More recently, she has focused on employee relations and labor strategy. But what truly distinguishes her leadership is a steady, grounded approach shaped by her challenges outside the office.

“Because of what I’ve gone through, I know how to reset expectations and take things hour by hour. That mindset makes me a better lawyer,” she explains.

Her calm, solution-oriented demeanor has become a hallmark of her leadership style.

“I don’t think there’s ever an issue that can’t be solved. We’ll find a solution – always. It may not always be the perfect solution, but we will find one,” she says.

That approach serves her well in an organization with over 13,000 Associates. Alfonso leads a lean but highly effective team of two attorneys, two paralegals, and a legal assistant. Her close, strategic partnership with Lennar’s HR department ensures seamless collaboration across many departments.

“We are constantly plugged into what is happening across the company,” she says.

Weekly calls with regional teams, compliance leads, and associate relations specialists ensure that legal and HR are always in alignment. Together, they manage the Associate Reference Guide, Lennar’s employee manual. This living document continuously evolves to reflect the ever-changing legal, regulatory, and workforce environment and is conveniently accessible through the Associate Portal

“It’s more than policy—it’s how we ensure our people are treated fairly.”

She firmly believes that when Legal and HR aren’t aligned, operational risk increases and employee trust is undermined.

“That alignment—constant communication—is to benefit our associates and our company,” she says.

Personal trials, professional strength

For all of Alfonso’s professional achievements, her resilience has been tested most deeply outside the office. Her son’s autism diagnosis was just the beginning. Years later, she balanced executive responsibilities with caregiving as her mother bravely battled terminal cancer for five grueling years. Alfonso juggled meetings with hospital visits, sometimes working bedside as her mother underwent treatment.

“Everybody at Lennar was completely understanding,” she recalls. “That support made all the difference.”

Then came a crisis of her own. In June 2024, Alfonso suffered a traumatic brain injury from a fall. She spent 21 days in the hospital recovering from brain surgery and underwent intensive inpatient rehab. Despite the severity of her injuries, she remained connected to her work, leading meetings remotely as she recovered with the help of her family, particularly her husband, and colleagues.

“My therapist said that professionals who use their brains a lot get their cognitive skills back very quickly,” she says with a smile. “Luckily, my recovery went very quickly from a cognitive standpoint.”

Through every stage of recovery, Lennar stood by her.

“A large part of the reason I’ve stayed so long is the support I’ve received,” she says. That support mirrors the culture she now helps cultivate—one where compassion is encouraged and operationalized.

Building the future, one person at a time

For Alfonso, mentorship isn’t optional–it’s essential. Whether guiding a paralegal, an assistant, or a fellow attorney, she tailors her approach to meet each person’s needs, always emphasizing clear, relatable communication that conveys legal strategy in a way that resonates with business leaders.

“Training a lawyer about labor and employment isn’t just about the law. It’s about how to talk to executives and meet them where they are.”

She also takes pride in negotiating cost-saving partnerships with outside counsel, a practice she began as a division lawyer and has expanded companywide. These alternative fee arrangements reflect a broader leadership ethos rooted in pragmatism, efficiency, and stewardship.

As for her perspective on work-life balance, Alfonso sees no tension between being a dedicated mother and a successful executive. If anything, the two roles reinforce each other.

“Being a single parent gave me perspective,” she says. “When somebody brings me a problem, I can say: It’s okay. Take a breath. We’ll figure it out.”

This philosophy has seen her through professional triumphs and personal trials and continues to play a vital role in shaping Lennar’s people-first culture. Alfonso’s journey is a compelling reminder that great leaders aren’t defined by ease, but by resilience and the courage to keep going even when the road is tough.

Testimonials

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
