There is some irony in how the legal profession tends to operate. So, notes Daniel Farrar, the chief executive officer of Assembly Software, a South Florida-based legal tech company that’s simplifying some of the most basic but necessary tasks for law firms of all sizes in plaintiff law, insurance defense, mass torts, family law, bankruptcy, and for all attorneys, as well as district attorneys, attorneys general, and other public entities.

“Much law is a repetitious process, especially plaintiff law, yet most law firms haven’t even fully adopted cloud-based software, much less artificial intelligence (AI),” he says. “Many firms are looking to manage a spectacular number of cases but lack the proper technology to do so effectively. Firms that aim to enhance their productivity, improve staff collaboration, and modernize and future-proof their practices must swiftly and strategically embrace new technology. Law firms that adapt their way of working in response to these advancements are more likely to succeed than their peers who do not.”
When Assembly Beta launched the embedded AI functionality into Neos (NeosAI) in July of 2023, more than sixty Neos firms eagerly raised their hands to participate and provide valuable feedback. The timing was critical, Farrar says, as the nine months of testing enabled the Assembly team to field and incorporate customer input to fine-tune the final product.
NeosAI was generally released (with much excitement and praise) in June 2024. Firms of all sizes can now benefit from AI features built natively in the Neos platform, unlike other systems that require third-party integrations or extra steps and compatibility. With the addition of strategic features and functionality, Neo’s reputation for customer-driven innovation continues to spread and grow throughout a competitive and tight-knit legal community.
The initial release of NeosAI includes AI-powered document summaries, document generation and document extraction.
The enhanced case management software can now automate routine processes to increase productivity and accuracy from case intake to billing and payments. It specifically caters to the demand for content and generation, making document writing effortless. Leveraging Neos data, it will draft an entire document, allowing easy modification of sections, content, and preview features. NeosAI also enables medical records and document extractions to upload documents into Neos workflow, extracting key details and information, automating the data entry process, and ensuring accuracy.
Farrar says effective use of its AI features can save firms of all practice types and sizes upwards of 36 hours preparing each case. He assures that Neos is also configurable and scalable, noting that the firms who participated in the Beta testing ranged from small firms to AM Law 100s.
Farrar also promises that lawyers or paralegals need not be technologically advanced to use it. “Neos provides what the customer requires in a user-friendly orientation regardless of the task.” Additionally, Assembly provides first-class and extensive training and support.
Leadership inspires and clientele grows
Farrar and the Assembly team leave nothing to chance when spreading the word on NeosAI. They are at nearly every legal tech conference and trade show, demonstrating the product’s power to law firms and public-sector legal entities. Interest in and adoption of NeosAI are growing daily, generating a solid following within the legal industry.
Farrar has been a vocal champion and evangelist of Neos and its evolution into an industry-leading legal tech platform. He is quick to assemble a “tiger” team to evaluate prospective customers’ needs and design an AI-powered case management solution built to be customer-first and future-proof.
He says the biggest differentiator between Neos and competitive offerings is Assembly’s ability to architect its features and functionality with customers in mind. Assembly prides itself on its commitment to integrating the “voice of the customer,” known as IVOC, into every product enhancement and feature release. Farrar believes strongly in product-led innovation and brings his unique and impressive background and deep experience to drive Assembly’s forward-thinking strategy.
Farrar received a degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, augmented three years later by an MBA from Harvard University. While an engineering degree with an MBA was an unusual combination during the 1980s, Farrar believes in the disciplined application of business and technology in a real-world manner. He may not be a lawyer, but he applies an analytical, data, and metric-driven approach to leadership.
With his General Electric pedigree from the Jack Welch era, he leads from the front.
“I’m not a fan of only getting classroom education,” he says. Everything needs a practical application. Good ideas in a book that have never been applied are just that: good ideas.”
The ideas can come from anywhere in the company or from our customers, but they must be put into practice and prosecuted for their impact.
Farrar has been practicing his good ideas for around three decades as a CEO, PE Partner, or in the C-suite at international technology companies or on the West Coast for Silicon Valley investors. Today, Farrar juggles his CEO position with part-time roles at two private equity and investment firms, as well as board seats.
Farrar joined Assembly Software in March 2020 after two years as the President and CEO of Mitel-UCaaS, a Canadian cloud company in San Francisco. He says Assembly Software has been his ideal fit, a cutting-edge operation born from the 2017 merger of two legal case management companies: Needles and Trialworks. The legacy of these companies lives on through Neos, which was launched as a cloud SaaS in 2020.
Organic fortitude
“The lifeblood of any company is good, solid organic commercial motion,” he says. We have got that here. Assembly is one of the best and most exciting companies I have had the privilege to run, mainly because of the people. We have a super high-quality team at every level of Assembly.”
According to Farrar, AI can play a more significant role in law as its parameters are better defined and artificial intelligence is given more boundaries. Any initial fears, trepidations, and ignorance will give way to recognition. as essential. Few professions are more data-ridden, process-oriented, and detail-intensive than legal, and he says Assembly is poised as the leader in technology and a disrupter in the most positive sense.
Under Farrar, the company has evolved in several areas. It is focused on solidifying its foundation, starting with the tech stack and product offering. In-house, there is an integrated process from code writing to product roadmaps for testing and quality assurance. The company operates with discipline and emphasis on metrics, with Farrar presiding over weekly and monthly cadence reviews. Agility and responsiveness are business as usual.
“I tell my teams, first give me your answer, and then tell me how you got there with data,” he says. “This way, we can collectively delve into the assumptions and methods that shape the answer. I’m not a bad slouch when it comes to analytics, data, and metrics, but I alone can’t build a better mousetrap than we do as a team.”
Farrar seems no slouch in any endeavor. The spry 63-year-old is a stickler for early morning workouts and has hobbies, including parachute skiing, scuba diving, building cars, motorcycle racing, adventure travel, opera, art collecting, and mountain climbing. A solo ascent on Kilimanjaro is among his conquests. Yes, he notes with regret, the glaciers have indeed receded.
However, time for those pursuits might be compromised for him with Assembly Software in growth mode. Farrar and the Assembly team anticipate wanting to capture more of the around $14 billion in the US litigation-to-services market. There is more to explore where legal and technology meet.
“We’ve brought Neos and the technology right where users, our customers, need it,” he says. “We will aim to continue to drive innovation and maintain our reputation as the industry leader in cloud products.”
