Though he held a stable and secure position, he felt an urge to do more than draft contracts and litigate cases; he wanted to immerse himself in the heartbeat of an industry, to understand its challenges from the inside.

Transitioning from a major firm to an in-house role at Quiborax, one of Chile’s most recognized mining companies, was not an easy decision.

“It was undoubtedly the best decision I could have made at the time,” Ocqueteau reflects. “What I have learned and studied in recent years has made me a much more prepared person on every level.”

That preparation has carried him through the complexities of modern mining law, from environmental compliance to corporate partnerships, and has positioned him as a leader who blends legal expertise with an appreciation for the social and cultural sensitivities that define mining operations in Chile.

Quiborax itself has deep roots in Chile’s mining history. The company is best known for its boron extraction and processing, but its vision extends far beyond one mineral. “The most significant challenges include maintaining competitive standards in the industry and improving processes through ongoing research and the incorporation of new technologies,” he explains.

Cost control is equally important, as is ensuring effective use of raw materials. Yet for Ocqueteau, the greatest challenge—and the greatest opportunity—lies in relationships.

“A key challenge is taking all necessary steps to maintain close, friendly, and sustainable relationships with the environment, surrounding communities, and our people. This is our main asset, and we will continue to work hard to improve it every day,” he explains.

This people-centered perspective reflects the way Ocqueteau views the practice of law within the mining world. Regulations, contracts, and negotiations matter, but so does trust—especially with the indigenous communities whose ancestral lands intersect with mining operations. Building bridges rather than barriers has become a cornerstone of Quiborax’s strategy.

While many corporate lawyers might highlight litigation or compliance as the hardest parts of their job, Ocqueteau sees it differently.

“None,” he says simply. “I love my job, and I consider it a blessing to be able to pursue my passions for law and mining at such an important company as Quiborax.”

Lithium: A strategic future

Though Quiborax has been a major player in boron mining for decades, the company’s future is also linked to another mineral: lithium. Given that Chile has the world’s largest lithium reserves, they represent a significant global opportunity and a national responsibility.

“The major challenge we want to tackle is a project we have been working on for many years involving lithium,” Ocqueteau shares.

The company is pursuing this initiative in consortium with the National Copper Corporation of Chile, the world’s largest publicly traded mining company.

Details remain tightly guarded due to strategic considerations, but Ocqueteau is optimistic about the project’s potential.

“We are confident that we will be able to move forward with it. In a few years, we hope to bring an initiative to fruition that will generate many jobs and benefits for the community while establishing Chile as a global pioneer in lithium carbonate production.”

This vision highlights Ocqueteau’s dual role: as a guardian of Quiborax’s legal responsibilities and as a strategist helping shape the company’s growth trajectory. By shepherding the legal frameworks that underpin the lithium project, he is directly contributing to Chile’s positioning in the global clean energy supply chain.

Leading a team, building trust

Behind every major mining project is a team of legal and regulatory experts navigating a maze of laws, permits, and community expectations. At Quiborax, Ocqueteau leads a tight-knit group of eight professionals, split across environmental and regulatory-legal functions. For him, stability and shared understanding are vital.

“Generally, we avoid changes to the team to maintain consistent criteria and a shared understanding of the business’s sensitivities and needs.”

When it comes to hiring, Ocqueteau looks less at résumés and more at character.

“I am not looking to hire talented people; I am looking to retain hardworking individuals who are committed, sensitive, and willing to take on big challenges.”

In his view, true talent lies in commitment, effort, practical intelligence, teamwork, and respect for both peers and the environment.

His greatest satisfaction, however, comes not from organizational charts or compliance reports but from his personal relationships with the indigenous communities near Quiborax’s operations.

“Their worldview and approach to life is a blessing and a unique opportunity to learn about and appreciate the wonderful, ancestral culture of these peoples,” he says. “When a company understands these sensitivities and adapts to them, everything flows sustainably and productively.”

This approach has not only strengthened community ties but has also positioned Quiborax as a company that values cultural respect alongside profitability.

Family, passions & perspective

Outside the office, Ocqueteau’s life is defined by family and personal passions that keep him grounded. He and his wife are raising three children—Martín, Blanca, and Maite—and he describes his greatest joy as spending quality time with them.

“I am passionate about my family. I have three extraordinary children and a supportive, hardworking, and wonderful wife. My greatest passions are spending quality time with my family and trying to be a good father and husband.”

Another passion takes him beyond the earth he regulates and into the skies: aviation. Ocqueteau is honing his piloting skills, driven by a dream of flying freely. That pursuit reflects the same adventurous spirit that guided him from private practice into the heart of a mining company—and that now drives him to embrace the challenges and opportunities of one of the world’s most strategic industries.

Although he remains skeptical of technology, such as artificial intelligence.

“I do not feel close to AI because I don’t find it useful for finding adequate solutions to real problems and challenges,” he says.

His personal philosophy emphasizes developing natural abilities and fostering human relationships. For him, law is not about machines generating answers but about people, communities, and the lived realities that shape their futures.
