A good night’s sleep is a big part of a healthy life, and having a healthy legal department is a big part of running a successful company. As senior vice president, legal and associate general counsel at Mattress Firm, Daria Russell plays a crucial leadership role at the nation’s largest omnichannel mattress specialty retailer.

Through more than 2,300 stores nationwide and its website, Mattress Firm offers a curated selection of high-quality sleep products to help people sleep well so they can live well. However, like many retailers with a national footprint, the company faces a complex legal and regulatory landscape. The ability to manage risk, ensure compliance and drive corporate governance is paramount to its sustained success. Russell leans on her background and experience to help ensure Mattress Firm’s continued successful business operation.
“Mattress Firm has undergone several changes since I started at the company, but fortunately, I’ve built muscle dealing with and adapting to change,” Russell explains.
Russell’s path to law was unplanned. Graduating with a degree in economics and Spanish from Southwestern University during a recession, she initially had no intention of attending law school. The collapse of Enron derailed her job prospects, so she took the LSAT while studying abroad in London. After returning to Houston, she worked a contract job at an energy company before applying to law school, ultimately earning her J.D. from Harvard University.
After nearly six years at Fulbright & Jaworski LLP (now known as Norton Rose Fulbright), Russell realized she wanted to work in-house. Her economics background and interest in business made transitioning to a company-focused role a natural fit. She joined Mattress Firm in 2015, and for nearly 10 years, Russell has played a crucial leadership role at the nation’s largest omni-channel mattress specialty retailer.
Throughout her career, especially during her time at Mattress Firm, Russell has developed a legal practice that is innovative and adaptable instead of focused on one traditional area of corporate law. Armed with big-law training as a corporate attorney, she has a practice that combines conventional corporate subject matter like M&A and finance with a more technology-driven workload focusing on data privacy, data governance and AI. She plays a pivotal role in executing Mattress Firm’s strategic vision, partnering with professionals across the company to ensure regulatory compliance and consummate essential business transactions. Her expertise and guidance have made her a respected asset to the company’s executive leadership team.
“My goal is to create a legal framework that protects Mattress Firm while empowering us to grow and innovate. It’s about teamwork, navigating challenges, and staying focused on our mission to help people get the best sleep possible,” Russell says.
An innovative practice
Part of Russell’s work is her support of corporate compliance initiatives at Mattress Firm. As the company expands across multiple states, she has been pivotal in developing a robust compliance framework that ensures adherence to evolving local, state, and federal regulations. This complex task involves coordinating across departments, regions, and regulatory bodies, helping to minimize legal risks and address potential issues before they escalate.
Russell developed legal advertising guidelines and implemented monthly training based on those guidelines. She also partnered with ITS to create a data privacy compliance program. As an author of the company’s AI policy, she serves as an internal thought leader about artificial intelligence and its potential uses.
Beyond her compliance work, Russell operates a more traditional corporate practice. She serves as the company’s assistant corporate secretary, negotiates material supplier agreements and sports sponsorship and licensing deals and has been a key member of Mattress Firm’s legal department during all the company’s significant transactions over the past 10 years.
Inspiring future leaders
Russell understands that the legal department must reflect the company’s commitment to excellence, and she fosters a culture that encourages collaboration and professional growth.
Russell strongly emphasizes professional development, and she has cultivated an environment where team members are encouraged to take on new challenges, expand their skill sets, and grow within the company.
“I look for opportunities to let my team shine and purposefully look for projects where colleagues can take the lead,” Russell says.
Russell’s dedication to leadership extends to her mentoring role within the broader organization. She is passionate about guiding younger professionals, helping them develop their skills, and providing them with the tools they need to succeed in their careers, and working to foster a company culture that is supportive of all.
Recently, she sponsored a live “M&A School” training for the Mattress Firm team. The eight-hour session, led by one of Russell’s former colleagues, aimed to ensure that the most junior people on the legal team and non-legal professionals had a solid overview of what an M&A transaction looks like. She also served as a founding member of Mattress Firm’s CEI Council, which promotes a culture of inclusion and community engagement at the company and helped to develop the Company’s most recently added corporate value, Promote Inclusion.
