Deborah Flores – TelevisaUnivision

Protecting TelevisaUnivision’s creative empire

TelevisaUnivision is a global leader in content creation, entertainment, and communication, driving the industry forward with a bold and innovative approach. The company navigates complex challenges in a competitive and rapidly evolving market, including adapting to the streaming boom, forming strategic alliances, and producing compelling content that resonates across generational and cultural divides. As IP Legal Director, Deborah Flores is indispensable in shaping and executing the company’s intellectual property strategies, ensuring that its creative assets are protected and optimized to support its broader business objectives.

Flores has spearheaded numerous transformative initiatives that reflect her expertise and forward-thinking approach. Among her most impactful projects is the implementation of anti-piracy programs aimed at safeguarding TelevisaUnivision’s digital platforms and linear content. These programs address the ever-present threat of piracy, a pervasive issue that endangers content producers’ financial and creative investments worldwide. By mitigating piracy volumes, Flores protects the company’s assets as well as secures its competitive edge and financial stability. Her work in this area goes beyond enforcement, focusing on creating systems that preserve the integrity and reputation of TelevisaUnivision’s diverse brands while aligning with overarching corporate objectives.

Flores’ leadership has also been instrumental in establishing comprehensive guidelines for intellectual property registration and protection across the United States and Mexico. These guidelines, tailored to meet the unique needs of both regions, enhance the company’s efficiency and budgetary effectiveness while empowering it to enforce its rights more robustly. By addressing the nuances of cross-border intellectual property management, Flores ensures that TelevisaUnivision operates seamlessly in a complex legal landscape, maximizing the value of its extensive intellectual property portfolio.

A critical area of Flores’ work involves developing and refining content acquisition and distribution frameworks. Understanding and optimizing content rights is essential in a fast-paced entertainment industry. Flores has established clear policies that outline the minimum requirements for rights acquisition, enabling the company to negotiate agreements that maximize usage and profitability. This strategic approach strengthens TelevisaUnivision’s operational efficiency and ensures that its content remains relevant and adaptable to market demands.

Flores’ contributions extend beyond policy-making and legal expertise. She fosters collaboration across TelevisaUnivision, integrating legal teams with production and operational departments to create a unified approach to intellectual property management. By implementing due diligence training and providing guidance on legislative advancements, Flores raises awareness of the importance of intellectual property protection throughout the organization. This collaborative culture underscores her belief that intellectual property is a cornerstone of innovation, growth and long-term success.

Since TelevisaUnivision’s unification two years ago, Flores has played a vital role in integrating the two legacy companies’ intellectual property policies and practices. This integration required navigating cultural and procedural differences to establish a cohesive strategy that aligns with the company’s global objectives. Her ability to balance these complexities ensures that the company is well-equipped to address the demands of an increasingly interconnected digital market.

The breadth of Flores’ responsibilities reflects the critical importance of intellectual property within TelevisaUnivision. From combating piracy to managing trademarks, copyrights, brand domains, and litigation, she faces the challenge of balancing immediate operational needs with long-term strategic planning. Her work enables the company to protect its assets and leverage them as tools for innovation and market leadership.

Through her vision and dedication, Flores has positioned TelevisaUnivision as a pioneer in intellectual property management. Her efforts safeguard the company’s creative investments, enhance its operational efficiency, and ensure its ability to thrive in a competitive and ever-changing industry. By aligning legal strategy with business goals, Flores underscores intellectual property’s vital role as a driver of success in the entertainment and communication sectors.

Flores’ journey began with a passion for intellectual property. During her university years, she interned at the Federal Administrative and Justice Court, handling tax issues, which honed her analytical skills. After graduating, she joined a law firm, but a pivotal moment came in 2008 when she applied for a property role at Televisa while also exploring a position at Bimbo. Although the latter opportunity didn’t materialize, destiny led her back to Televisa three years later.

Starting as an intern, Flores steadily climbed the ranks, navigating challenges as a young woman in a competitive field. In 2018, she secured her management role through a rigorous competition, a testament to her resilience and expertise. Alongside her professional ascent, she earned a master’s degree in business law with an honorable mention, distinguishing herself among 30 peers in a company-sponsored program.

Televisa became her intellectual property playground, offering exposure to diverse regulated objects, such as publishers, artists, and broadcasters, while enabling her to engage in legislative advocacy. Flores also contributes as a professor, teaching advertising and copyright contracts in a master’s program and within the company, sharing her knowledge of intellectual property law.

Testimonials

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
