Ekumene Lysonge, or “E” as he’s known professionally, is the chief legal officer and corporate secretary at NerdWallet, a company that empowers consumers and SMBs to make financial decisions with confidence. NerdWallet provides individuals and businesses access to expert content, comparison shopping marketplaces, and tools that help them make decisions about their money. From its inception, NerdWallet’s mission has been to clarify life’s financial decisions by offering consumers trustworthy and knowledgeable financial guidance regarding personal finance, credit scores, loans, mortgages and more. The company’s services span its highly trafficked website and mobile app, reaching millions of users globally.

At the heart of NerdWallet’s operations is a commitment to building trust with its users, and Lysonge plays a crucial role in ensuring that this trust is maintained. As the leader of NerdWallet’s Trust and Safety Team, Lysonge oversees the company’s legal, compliance, and information security functions. This team, comprising 30 highly skilled individuals, including lawyers, paraprofessionals and security experts, focuses on safeguarding the interests of NerdWallet’s employees and users.

“The Trust and Safety Team’s primary mission is to ensure that NerdWallet’s platform remains a safe and secure environment for all who interact with it, aligned with the company’s broader goal of transparency and consumer empowerment in financial matters,” Lysonge tells Vanguard during an interview in late September.

Enhancing data protection and compliance

Lysonge says the Trust and Safety Team plays a multifaceted role, dealing with legal challenges, navigating compliance landscapes and overseeing data protection to mitigate risks. These efforts include closely monitoring the evolving legal landscape surrounding fintech, privacy regulations, and cyber threats. The team also regularly assesses NerdWallet’s security infrastructure to remain best-in-class.

In addition to their legal and security responsibilities, the Trust and Safety Team works on several high-priority projects to enhance platform security and compliance across NerdWallet’s digital ecosystem. These projects range from implementing new data encryption protocols and improving two-factor authentication for users to developing training programs for employees on information security and privacy best practices. One of their major initiatives is collaborating with product teams to ensure that any new features or services offered adhere to legal and security standards.

“By embedding compliance at the core of innovation, our team ensures that the company can grow and expand without exposing itself to unnecessary risks,” Lysonge explains.

Consumer protection is another significant aspect of the Trust and Safety Team’s work. Lysonge spearheads efforts to create a transparent and user-friendly experience where consumers are informed about how their data is used. The team routinely audits and reviews NerdWallet’s privacy policies to ensure they are clear, accessible, and aligned with regulatory requirements. Proactively addressing potential areas of concern helps preserve the company’s reputation as a trusted advisor in the financial space.

Cultivating team cohesion in a remote-first environment

Leadership and team cohesion are at the core of Lysonge’s management philosophy. Despite NerdWallet’s remote-first structure, which sees employees working from hub offices in New York, Colorado, Arizona, and the United Kingdom, Lysonge has cultivated a strong connection within the Trust and Safety Team. He leads regular team meetings, monthly social events and quarterly all-hands gatherings to maintain a unified focus across all functions.

“These sessions are an opportunity to review the company’s current standing, assess the progress of ongoing projects, and realign the team’s objectives with NerdWallet’s overarching business goals,” he notes.

Recruiting and retaining top talent are key priorities for Lysonge, particularly in the competitive legal and information security landscape. To build a high-performing team, he emphasizes technical skills and cultural fit. New hires are carefully selected based on their ability to thrive in a dynamic, remote environment while contributing to the company’s mission of empowering consumers. Retention is equally essential, and Lysonge is dedicated to fostering a work environment that supports employee well-being. He strongly emphasizes work-life balance, offering flexible working hours and opportunities for professional development, such as continued legal education and certifications.

Seizing opportunities

Lysonge’s journey began with a fascination for politics and advocacy, influenced by his upbringing in Indianapolis. Although he initially dreamed of working on Wall Street as a trader, his interest shifted during college at Fisk University, where he majored in political science. Internships with organizations like the Tennessee Association for Criminal Defense Lawyers gave him his first taste of lobbying and legal reform, inspiring him to attend Vanderbilt University School of Law.

After law school, Lysonge joined Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, formerly known as Faegre Drinker, an Am Law 100 law firm in Indianapolis focusing on government affairs. His entrepreneurial side flourished when he launched his own private practice alongside former colleagues. A key turning point came when he represented a landowner in a sale to Simon Property Group. His work on the deal caught the attention of Simon’s legal team, leading to an in-house legal role at the company. This marked the start of his corporate legal career, which included over five years at Simon and Pedcor Investments.

Lysonge continued to rise in the legal field, spending nearly six years at Churchill Downs Incorporated as vice president, legal affairs responsible for the Kentucky Derby and over four years as vice president and general counsel at Snapfish. In March 2021, he joined NerdWallet, becoming chief legal officer and corporate secretary by April 2023.

Outside work, Lysonge remains a passionate fan of his sports teams, mainly the Las Vegas Raiders and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This fandom started with wide receiver Tim Brown’s Heisman Trophy-winning season in 1987 and throughout his Hall of Famer career in the NFL.
