Elena Stein has spent her career tackling complex legal challenges with a business-minded approach, and today, she stands at the helm of Dyson’s legal operations in the Americas. As the regional general counsel, Stein leads a dynamic legal team that touches nearly every facet of the company’s commercial activity.
Elena Stein | Dyson | General Counsel, Americas
Stein’s journey to becoming Dyson’s legal lead for the Americas wasn’t a straight path but one built on years of diverse experience. Originally from Michigan, Stein earned her undergraduate degree in health science from Benedictine University before deciding to pursue law. She attended the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law during the economic crisis of the late 2000s when the path to in-house legal roles was rare for recent graduates. Instead, Stein started her career in private practice, where she gained valuable experience before joining Claim Toolkit as senior legal counsel.
“I always knew I wanted to be a corporate attorney,” Stein says. “I really like helping people and solving problems. However, during the economic downturn, the likelihood of going in-house right after law school was low. So, I took the opportunities that came my way and tried to diversify as much as possible.”
This mindset of adaptability and resilience has shaped Stein’s career. After several years in private practice, she joined Dyson in August 2021 as associate general counsel for the Americas and was promoted to her current role in April 2023.
A global operation
Stein’s team of about 10 legal professionals handles various legal matters for the Americas, including commercial activities, marketing and advertising claims, employment law, and regulatory compliance.
“I have a hand in a little bit of everything,” she explains. “All commercial activities flow through me. We’re also expanding into Latin America, which flows through my team.”
Her team works closely with Dyson’s global litigation team to respond to competitor claims and ensure the company’s products meet regulatory standards across markets.
“It’s a unique challenge,” she notes. “We do a lot with product litigation, marketing claims, and responding to regulators. There’s a constant need to stay ahead of market trends and competitor actions.”
Rising fast and leading
Stein’s role goes beyond traditional legal work—it requires a deep understanding of Dyson’s business operations and commercial goals.
“At this point in my career, it’s so much more important to see things through a commercial lens,” she says. “I’m not just a legal advisor but a business partner. I sit with the Americas executive team, and I’m expected to opine on non-legal matters. It’s about understanding the business, comparing what we’re doing with other regions, and always thinking with my legal hat on.”
Stein also manages a team, which is a significant part of her job. She takes that responsibility seriously. She says half the job of a people manager is managing others, and many variables are involved.
“I try to prioritize my team—what do they need from me? What do I need to keep them moving? And then there’s the work itself. What do I need to accomplish by the end of the week,” Stein explains.
She describes her role as balancing managing people, providing critical legal guidance, and ensuring the team is aligned with Dyson’s overall business objectives.
Stein credits her primary mentor, John Curtin, her predecessor at Dyson and now the global general counsel and compliance officer at Martin Brower, with much of her professional growth.
“John began mentoring me very early on. We joined Dyson a week apart, and I couldn’t have asked for a better boss and mentor. He exuded kindness and support—he changed my perspective on what a legal leader can be and look like,” she says.
Empowering female leaders
Stein now pays that mentorship forward, particularly to women in the legal field.
“I’m currently mentoring a female IP attorney at Dyson,” she says. “As a woman leader, it’s important to mentor other women. I’ve previously encountered gender bias in the workplace, and I am proud to work at Dyson, a Forbes global Top 100 ‘Female-Friendly Companies’ to work for. I always tell women to find their supporters in their company and industry. That support base is growing, and it’s important to find the people who can help lift you.”
As a resident of Chicago, Stein enjoys live music and trying new restaurants outside her legal work. Originally from Michigan, she lived in Pennsylvania before moving to Illinois during high school. Her career journey has taken her through various legal roles and industries, but she’s found a professional home at Dyson.
“I shot up very quickly within Dyson, and I’m thrilled with where I am in my career. I love the people I work with, and I’m excited by the challenges of this role. It’s so much more than legal work—it’s a real part of the business. There’s no staying in your lane here.”
Stein’s path to in-house legal leadership has been perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning.
“The best thing we can do as general counsels is stakeholder management, especially in an unstable environment. You must be a stable advisor to the business—prepare for the worst and hope for the best. We always want to do right by our consumers. That’s what it’s all about,” Stein says.
