Emma Kerr – Albemarle Corporation

Leading growth through M&A

Emma Kerr’s career reflects a steady evolution shaped less by linear progression and more by intentional reinvention, a pattern that has defined her rise into a strategically critical legal role at Albemarle Corporation. As vice president and deputy general counsel overseeing mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures, Kerr operates at the intersection of legal precision and corporate strategy, guiding decisions that influence the company’s global growth.

Long before she was structuring complex deals, Kerr envisioned a future in acting, drawn to storytelling and performance. That instinct ultimately translated into a different arena. A pivotal American government class and the influence of a mentor redirected her toward law, where she discovered a form of advocacy rooted in analysis and persuasion.

Entering law school later than many peers, Kerr approached it with maturity and focus. She started her legal career in litigation during a challenging economic period, developing resilience and a sharp strategic mindset.

“I started practicing as a litigator and worked under a tough litigator, so I learned to be more aggressive in my style and nature,” Kerr says.

That foundation built discipline but also revealed limits.

Expanding scope across industries

Kerr’s move in-house marked the start of a career defined by breadth. Across managed services, technology, procurement, and petrochemicals, she grew her areas of practice from litigation into operations, technology and IP, and supply chain matters, while developing deep expertise in construction, commercial, and indemnities. Each role deepened her commercial fluency and business acumen.

Her time with Phillips 66 proved especially formative. She helped support the growth of a midstream business from approximately $1 billion to roughly $4 billion, working across joint ventures and capital projects. The role required her to connect legal frameworks with engineering and commercial priorities.

“When I started at Phillips, I was handed a $2.5 billion joint venture project on my first day,” Kerr says.

Success depended on relationships as much as technical skill. Kerr focused on identifying key stakeholders and building trust through execution, reinforcing a principle that continues to guide her leadership.

However, building trust took time. Kerr began intensely working to approach relationships less from the more assertive-litigator viewpoint to a thought partner and advisor.

“In litigation, you are always trying to win, but in transactional work, you are looking for the best deal for your side while also considering the other side,” Kerr says.

Global dealmaking & leadership at Albemarle

Kerr joined Albemarle Corporation in January 2026, stepping into a role at the center of the company’s strategic initiatives. Albemarle is a world leader in transforming essential resources into critical ingredients for mobility, energy, connectivity, and health. With strengths in lithium, bromine, and specialty chemical solutions, the company supports technologies that power electric vehicles, enable grid reliability, and help bring life-saving medications to market.

Within this environment, Kerr manages the legal dimensions of mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures, including major partnerships in Australia and the Middle East. She is also contributing to the legal department’s efforts to modernize legal processes and integrate emerging technologies that can improve efficiency and consistency across the legal function.

The global nature of her work introduces logistical complexity. Coordinating across time zones requires flexibility, with meetings often occurring most often in the evening hours.

Despite the demands, she views this as an intrinsic part of the role.

“There are late nights, and that can be harder with young kids, but the work is interesting, which makes being up late easier,” Kerr says.

Her leadership structure emphasizes trust. With a lean team that includes a real estate and M&A lawyer and a regional legal lead in Australia, Kerr prioritizes delegation.

“You have to let people do the roles they know how to do and trust the people you hired to do the work,” Kerr says.

Leading through relationships & strategy

As Kerr integrates into Albemarle, she emphasizes relationship building. Early onboarding focused on meeting executives and understanding internal dynamics, establishing connections that support collaboration and informed decision-making.

This relational approach is essential in dealmaking, where trust and reputation shape outcomes and influence long-term partnerships.

“At the end of the day, it is a small world, and reputation is everything in this business,” Kerr says.

Her leadership philosophy is rooted in servant leadership, emphasizing listening, clarity, and alignment with business goals. Over time, she refined her communication style by observing strong transactional lawyers, becoming more collaborative and less adversarial.

At Albemarle, that mindset extends to innovation. Kerr is exploring artificial intelligence within the legal function as a tool to enhance efficiency and provide structured starting points for analysis. However, she views human judgment as indispensable for strategy and decision-making.

Balancing ambition & personal life

Kerr’s journey is also defined by balance. As a solo parent, she navigates the demands of an executive role alongside raising two young children, requiring both structure and adaptability.

She maintains that balance through intentional practices such as yoga and staying engaged in broader interests like politics and policy. These elements provide perspective alongside the intensity of deal work and reinforce her commitment to being present in both professional and personal roles.

The challenges are real, particularly in a role that demands flexibility and long hours. Yet Kerr approaches them with the same mindset that has shaped her career. Adaptability and resilience.

Looking ahead, she sees her role at Albemarle as an opportunity to grow as an executive leader while contributing to the company’s strategic direction. She aims to deepen her influence in M&A and joint ventures, evolve alongside emerging technologies and industry trends, and strengthen her role as a trusted advisor to leadership.

Her trajectory remains dynamic, defined by movement and growth. The stage she once imagined has been replaced by boardrooms and negotiations, but the underlying drive remains. To engage, to persuade, and to create impact.

In that sense, her career has come full circle. The performance is different, but the purpose is not, and she continues to shape outcomes at the highest level of business and law every single day in practice.

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.

It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
