Building the pillars of risk management

At Galicia, risk management is not an afterthought but a strategic priority. The firm has developed a framework of pillars that guide its operations and protect it from both internal and external risks.

One of those pillars is supplier management, ensuring that third-party partners align with Galicia’s culture of compliance. Another is client relations, which goes beyond quality in legal services but also includes regulating client interactions and engagements, addressing conflicts of interest and KYC processes. A third is the risk and compliance pillar, critical for a firm that serves domestic and international clients that require compliance with local regulations and foreign standards, including adapting best practices for the Mexican context and operations. With the support and help of the Managing Partners, the senior management of Galicia, and the Partners in general, Arguello has built helpful communication channels within the firm, crafted policies that are accepted across the firm, and promoted a shared compliance culture.

When Galicia created the General Counsel position three years ago, few Mexican firms had considered such a role. Today, more firms are following suit. The innovation reflects the reality that law firms, like their clients, are now sophisticated businesses that require internal risk oversight, compliance systems, and governance structures.

What makes the position unique at Galicia is the fact that the GC and his team are surrounded by some of the best lawyers in their fields.

“One unique aspect of this role in a law firm is that you have the privilege of working with some of the best legal minds,” he says. His role is not to out-argue them, but to coordinate, to bring perspective across different disciplines, and to ensure that internal strategies are robust and consistent.

That coordination frees Galicia’s partners to focus on client-facing work.

“The GC by handling internal legal matters can help partners and release them from doing some administrative tasks and internal work so that they can focus on serving clients, delivering outstanding legal services, growing the firm’s business relationships, and leading their teams,” Arguello explains.

By handling internal legal and administrative matters, he enables lawyers to do what they do best—practice law.

The scope of his role is unusually wide, spanning contract law, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, dispute resolution, preventive compliance programs (including AML, Anticorruption, and Data Privacy), and professional liability. This interdisciplinary approach requires flexibility and the ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously, but it also offers constant opportunities for innovation.

Innovating for the future

Looking ahead, Galicia’s GC and his team are collaborating in several initiatives designed to modernize the firm and enhance both client and partner experiences. A highlight is Galicia’s client onboarding optimization project, which aims to streamline compliance checks, billing systems, and new client identification requirements. Another is an overhaul of the conflict-check process, making it easier for partners to identify and address potential issues with efficiency.

These initiatives are being developed alongside Galicia’s internal Technology Committee, with a particular focus on automation and artificial intelligence.

“We’re committed to embracing new technologies and AI solutions that are adaptable to our needs and enhance our collaborative capabilities,” Arguello says.

For him, AI represents an opportunity to free lawyers from routine administrative work, allowing them to concentrate on strategic and creative problem-solving tasks focused on their clients.

Arguello views these projects not as challenges but as opportunities for teamwork and innovation.

“It is a privilege to work across different fields of legal practice,” he notes, adding that teamwork with Galicia’s 260 lawyers makes even the most complex initiatives and challenges manageable.

The firm’s size and diversity also make collaboration essential. With a core in-house team of three professionals, they seek the expertise of partners, associates, and counsels across the 25 practice areas. This hybrid model allows his department to remain lean while tapping into extraordinary resources when needed.

“This collaborative model allows us to address legal matters holistically, combining deep specialization with comprehensive strategic oversight,” he says.

A career forged in compliance & strategy

Arguello’s ability to handle such responsibilities stems from a career that has always combined law with business strategy. Born in Comitán, Chiapas, he studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), with a semester abroad at King’s College London. During his studies, he gained early corporate experience at an international insurance company. Later, at a telecommunications giant, he rotated across departments before becoming a compliance manager at just 26.

That trajectory convinced him that his passion lay in the analytical, preventative, and strategic side of law rather than courtroom litigation. To deepen his expertise, he pursued an LLM at the University of Cambridge, supported by scholarships from the Brockmann Foundation and the Cambridge Trust. Returning to Mexico, he brought with him an international perspective on compliance, governance, and risk—skills that would prove invaluable at Galicia.

His philosophy is shaped by both professional and personal experiences. Outside of work, he is passionate about equestrian sports, particularly show jumping, which he credits with developing qualities like concentration, resilience, and perseverance. These, he says, strengthen his ability to perform under pressure in the legal world.

“This role is rewarding because, working together as a solid team of lawyers, we have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference within the firm,” he reflects.
