Estanislao Mezzadri – Google

Navigating the digital legal frontier in Latin America

When Estanislao Mezzadri was named Google’s head of legal for Spanish-speaking Latin America (SpLatam) in 2024, he brought with him not only decades of legal experience under his belt but also a passion for balancing innovation with structure in one of the world’s most complex legal landscapes. Now leading a team of top-tier lawyers at one of the globe’s most transformative companies, Mezzadri is helping shape how digital ecosystems evolve in Latin America—bringing law and technology into closer harmony.

Google, the world’s preeminent tech giant, operates under a bold mission: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and helpful. In Latin America, that mission meets a myriad of legal and infrastructural complexities—making Mezzadri’s role a linchpin in Google’s regional strategy.

“My job isn’t just helping Google achieve its commercial objectives,” Mezzadri explains. “It’s also about interacting with governments and legislators to promote legal frameworks—not just for us, but for the broader digital ecosystem. That includes infrastructure projects like interoceanic cables and data centers that can democratize access to the internet.”

In a region where legal certainty is often elusive, Mezzadri’s efforts focus on building regulatory environments that foster growth and innovation while respecting local legal traditions and societal values.

From the courtroom to the classroom

Mezzadri’s career has never followed a straight line. Before arriving at Google, he worked across private firms, solo practice, and even government service in Argentina’s Security Ministry. He’s litigated in courtrooms and lectured in classrooms. But one moment stands out: his 2022 appearance before the Argentine Supreme Court in a landmark case on the right to be forgotten.

“The ruling set a regional precedent on the unconstitutionality of a concept created in the E.U.,” he recalls. “It was a pivotal moment not just for Argentina, but for Latin America in terms of freedom of expression and digital rights.”

He’s also appeared in major tech-related cases in Chile, Uruguay, and Mexico, establishing himself as a leading voice on privacy, intermediary liability, and emerging tech law.

“I’ve had the chance to do some first-rate lawyering for one of the most innovative companies in the world,” he says. “It’s incredibly fulfilling.”

Mezzadri, who also teaches civil procedural law at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, credits much of his professional evolution to a willingness to pivot.

“Probably my biggest career challenge has been to reinvent myself continuously,” he says. “To find new ways to stay curious, keep learning, and maintain a healthy work-life balance.”

Leading through learning

Now at the helm of an eight-person legal team—six focused on commercial law and two on litigation and regulatory issues—Mezzadri is navigating a new challenge: leadership.

“The shift from individual contributor to people manager is humbling,” he says. “These are professionals I used to work alongside, and now I’m responsible for their careers. That pushes me to be the best leader I can be.”

His leadership style is collaborative and rooted in mutual respect.

“I’ve been fortunate to lead an established team. Honestly, I learn more from them than I can teach them,” he admits. “But what I try to instill is that legal judgment and a hunger to learn are more important than knowing everything on day one.”

Recruitment and retention are also at the top of his mind.

“We’re not just looking for legal skill—we want people who are genuinely curious, who see law as a tool to shape innovation responsibly,” he says. “Google’s selection process is extensive, and I was proud to lead the hiring of a new teammate recently. It helped us strengthen our litigation and regulatory practice.”

Embracing AI and the future

For Mezzadri, artificial intelligence is the most exciting and most daunting legal frontier ahead. “AI is probably the most profound and transformative technology being developed today,” he notes. “The societal benefits are enormous, but it’s still experimental—which means responsible development and regulation are crucial.”

Latin America, he says, faces a particular challenge: outdated legal frameworks that weren’t built with today’s technologies in mind. “Our main legal challenge is shaping a regulatory vision that allows AI to thrive without compromising safety, equity, or innovation,” Mezzadri emphasizes. “Poor regulation can be as damaging as no regulation at all.”

In practice, that means integrating AI not just into the tech but into the legal workflow itself.

“At Google, we’re expected to use AI tools like Gemini and Notebook LM to boost productivity, analyze contracts, and summarize decisions. But we’re also taught to be cautious, human oversight remains essential.”

Looking ahead, Mezzadri will be particularly focused on AI-related projects in 2025. “There’s an enormous opportunity—not just to develop new products, but to make infrastructure investments that ensure Latin America doesn’t fall behind.”

Outside of work, Mezzadri leads a vibrant life. Born in Buenos Aires, he’s the oldest of four siblings, a husband to Lucila, and a father of three boys.

“We love to travel as a family,” he shares. “Our last trip was to Rio de Janeiro, and we had a great time.”

A former rugby player turned coach for his youngest son’s team, Mezzadri now spends his weekends watching Newman, his local club, and learning paddle tennis with his wife. He’s also a writer and lover of literature, quietly working on poetry, short stories, and even a novel.

Whether in the courtroom, the classroom, or the corporate boardroom, Estanislao Mezzadri remains a bridge-builder—linking law, technology, and culture to shape a more inclusive digital future for Latin America.

“At the end of the day, my role is about helping our region become more relevant—inside Google and beyond,” he says. “That’s not just a professional goal. It’s a personal one.”

Testimonials

It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.

The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
