“I have always been passionate about law, inspired by my maternal grandfather, who was a police chief,” Grasselli reflects. “During law school, I realized corporate law was my calling. Over the years, I have moved from litigation in labor law to in-house legal counsel, where I have found my passion for strategic legal work.”

Her transition from litigation to in-house counsel was a turning point in her career. While litigation provided valuable experience in risk management and negotiations, the opportunity to work on corporate legal strategy allowed her to influence business decisions at a broader level.

“Being part of the decision-making process, rather than reacting to issues after they arise, excites me the most about my current role,” she adds.

Primient is a global food and industrial ingredients sector leader, providing innovative solutions for various industries. However, operating in Latin America presents unique hurdles, particularly in the import market.

Beyond import challenges, supply chain disruptions and global economic volatility also complicate Primient’s business in the region. Grasselli and her team must continuously assess potential risks and implement legal frameworks that protect the company from external uncertainties.

In addition, Brazil’s ever-evolving regulatory environment presents another layer of complexity.

“The most challenging aspect of my work is managing Brazil’s constantly changing regulations,” Grasselli explains. “Yet, what I enjoy most is the strategic side—engaging with senior leadership, shaping key discussions, and making critical decisions in negotiations and risk management.”

Legal challenges & strategic adaptations

One of the most pressing issues Primient faces in Latin America is Brazil’s tax reform, which is expected to impact business operations significantly starting in 2025.

“My focus is on thoroughly understanding these regulatory changes and exploring potential opportunities that new legislation may bring,” Grasselli says. “We need to be well-prepared for different scenarios.”

The unpredictable nature of tariffs and regulations under Brazil’s new administration further complicates the company’s operations. Grasselli and her team remain proactive, conducting ongoing studies and strategic discussions to mitigate risks.

In addition to taxation, compliance with labor and environmental regulations requires continuous adaptation.

“Sustainability and corporate responsibility are becoming increasingly important in Latin America,” she notes. “Ensuring that our legal frameworks align with evolving environmental laws and corporate social responsibility standards is a priority.”

Despite these challenges, Grasselli operates alone in Brazil, with her broader legal team based in the United States. “This structure highlights the need for a strategic and collaborative approach throughout the organization,” she notes. “I work closely with teams across ethics and compliance, sustainability, and procurement to ensure that our legal strategies support broader business goals.”

As legal landscapes evolve, so does the role of technology. Artificial intelligence has emerged as a potential game-changer in regulatory research, offering efficiency and deeper insights into legal frameworks. However, Grasselli remains cautious about over-reliance on AI.

“It should be used with balance and discernment,” she warns. “Excessive dependence on AI could compromise ethical principles such as confidentiality.”

AI’s ability to streamline document reviews, contract analysis, and regulatory monitoring is promising, but Grasselli believes that human judgment remains irreplaceable.

“Technology should enhance legal work, not replace it,” she emphasizes. “Ethical considerations, strategic thinking, and relationship-building are aspects of legal counsel that technology cannot replicate.”
