Gabriela Arias – The Coca-Cola Bottling System

Shaping a sustainable future

When Gabriela Arias joined the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in 2001, she began not in law but in finance. As an administrative assistant in the finance department, she quickly developed an interest in how the company’s operations, partnerships, and governance came together. That curiosity led her to study law and later join The Coca-Cola Bottling System’s legal department in Costa Rica, where her commitment to professional growth began to shape her career trajectory.

Over the years, she held multiple positions across the company’s legal structure, collaborating with teams in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Panama. Each experience expanded her perspective on how legal and corporate affairs can support the operational heart of a company as complex and dynamic as The Coca-Cola Bottling System.

“I have met very important people for my professional and personal training who guided my path with great ethics and transparency,” she says. “You never stop learning, and it is always necessary to be up to date to be able to cope with all new challenges.”

Today, as manager of corporate and legal affairs for The Coca-Cola Bottling System in Guatemala, Arias leads with empathy, diligence, and a deep respect for teamwork. She credits her journey—and the mentors who believed in her—with shaping a leadership style rooted in continuous learning and integrity.

The Coca-Cola Bottling System, headquartered in Mexico City, is the world’s largest Coca-Cola franchise bottler by sales volume, producing, marketing, and distributing beverages for every lifestyle and occasion. With operations spanning Latin America, the company’s purpose is to refresh the world responsibly while advancing a strong sustainability agenda focused on climate action, water management, circular economy, and community well-being. In Guatemala, where Arias plays a pivotal role, those values take shape through significant investment, innovation, and social impact.

Driving investment and opportunity

The company’s influence in Guatemala extends well beyond beverages. Over the past seven years, the company has invested nearly 540 million dollars to strengthen operations, modernize facilities, and create hundreds of jobs. These efforts are transforming communities and reinforcing Guatemala’s role as a key hub for regional production and distribution.

Arias has been instrumental in supporting these projects from the legal and corporate affairs side, ensuring that every expansion aligns with municipal, environmental, labor, and commercial regulations while also maintaining open communication with nearby communities and local governments.

Among the most transformative initiatives was the expansion of the

Comercializadora y Productora de Bebidas Los Volcanes, S.A. bottling plant in San Sebastián, Retalhuleu. Completed in 2021, the project increased production capacity by more than 150 percent and generated over 500 direct and indirect jobs.

“We seek that our brand is loved and respected, and that our employees, investors, and shareholders feel proud to belong to a company where ethics, transparency, and legality are part of its fundamental principles,” Arias explains.

That same philosophy guides the ongoing expansion of the Alimentos y Bebidas Atlántida S.A. bottling plant in Zacapa, which will become the region’s largest production facility. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the company will increase manufacturing and distribution capacity while enhancing logistics and efficiency across the entire value chain.

From the legal side, Arias ensures that all contracts, permits, and licenses are handled in full compliance with current regulations. From the corporate affairs perspective, she works to strengthen relationships with local communities, supporting projects that align corporate growth with social and environmental responsibility. Together, these functions demonstrate how a global company can advance responsibly while creating shared value in every region it serves.

Balancing growth and sustainability

As The Coca-Cola Bottling System continues to grow, Arias and her team are responsible for ensuring that every initiative aligns with the company’s sustainability principles. The legal management structure has evolved to include compliance, sustainability, regulatory affairs, and external communications—reflecting a commitment to long-term environmental and social stewardship.

“As leaders, we must gain experience and skills in areas beyond legal training,” Arias says. “This shows that as professionals, we have the ability to learn and be excellent in a variety of topics, ranging from implementing sustainability projects to managing communication and public relations strategies.”

Sustainability, she emphasizes, is not a separate function within the company but a fundamental part of how business decisions are made. About 35 percent of The Coca-Cola Bottling System’s sales in Guatemala now come from returnable packaging, reducing waste, cutting costs for consumers, and lowering the company’s carbon footprint. The universal bottle model allows containers to be refilled and relabeled up to 25 times, setting a regional benchmark for circular production.

Last year, the company opened its first local collection center in Escuintla, which can process up to 3,000 tons of waste per year. It is one of 43 collection centers The Coca-Cola Bottling System operates across ten countries, promoting collaborative recycling and strengthening value chains through partnerships with communities and local collectors.

Since 2019, The Coca-Cola Bottling System has operated with renewable energy.

Solar panels at distribution centers now power operations that are more efficient and environmentally responsible. The company has also invested in electric and low-emission vehicles to reduce carbon output in its transportation fleet.

“Sustainability is at the heart of our business because it is part of the way we operate, in decision-making and creating long-term value,” Arias says. “We have worked to ensure that sustainability is not perceived as a separate function, but as an element that drives business continuity, resilience, and growth.”

Empowering people and communities

For Arias, true progress comes from people. Her leadership philosophy emphasizes empowerment, inclusion, and collaboration. Managing a multigenerational and multidisciplinary team has shown her the value of diverse perspectives and open communication.

“There is no perfect formula for integration,” she says, “but if there is an atmosphere of respect and good communication, it is possible to face all challenges and promote the transfer of knowledge and experiences.”

This people-first approach extends beyond internal teams to the company’s work with NGOs, municipalities, and local organizations. The Coca-Cola Bottling System collaborates with these partners to strengthen access to clean water, improve sanitation, and promote hygiene education. Each initiative is designed for long-term sustainability, ensuring that communities receive lasting benefits.

“When we invest in communities, we are not only providing resources, but we are building a sense of community and promoting social inclusion,” Arias explains.

Her work in Zacapa is particularly meaningful. The investment there has created new opportunities for local families and strengthened the region’s economic and social infrastructure. “We take pride in being a catalyst for change that drives the region’s sustainable progress,” she says. “Our work must generate a positive and meaningful impact on people’s lives.”

Under her leadership, the corporate and legal affairs team promotes ethics, transparency, and preventive management across all business areas. Training sessions, legal workshops, and cross-departmental dialogue ensure that compliance and ethical behavior are not just policies but everyday practices.

“When a leader remains calm, determined, and clear in vision during challenging times, the team follows suit,” she says. “This approach has been key to building strong, committed teams focused on achieving sustainable results.”

Advancing a shared value

For Arias, the future of The Coca-Cola Bottling System operations in Guatemala will continue to blend innovation with responsibility. The company is deepening its sustainability commitments through projects that optimize water use, expand circular economy practices, and promote renewable energy adoption.

“Our goal is to contribute to a circular economy through innovation, focusing on sustainable design, reuse, and recycling of our packaging,” she says. “Our success is deeply connected to the well-being of our communities and our entire value chain.”

As she reflects on her journey—from administrative assistant to a regional leader guiding corporate integrity and sustainability—Arias sees resilience and collaboration as her greatest tools. Her leadership, rooted in empathy and driven by purpose, mirrors the company’s larger vision of creating shared value across business and society.

In The Coca-Cola Bottling System, that vision is alive every day: in every bottle returned, every community supported, and every employee empowered to grow. Arias continues to guide that mission forward—ensuring that ethics, transparency, and sustainability remain at the center of one of the world’s most recognized and respected brands.

The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.

It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
