Guillermo Zulueta – Bimba Y Lola

Navigating global expansion in fashion

Guillermo Zulueta is the legal director at Bimba Y Lola, a leading international fashion brand headquartered in Spain. The company is renowned globally for its distinct style, high-quality apparel, and accessories. It is known for blending innovation and sustainability, bringing a fresh perspective to the fashion industry. As the head of legal affairs, Zulueta ensures that Bimba Y Lola navigates its expanding presence across various markets while adhering to legal and regulatory frameworks.

As the legal director, Zulueta is integral to the company’s strategic decision-making process. He manages the legal aspects of daily operations while supporting long-term business goals. His responsibilities encompass corporate governance, compliance, intellectual property protection, and general legal counsel on business expansion, partnerships, and acquisitions.

“I also provide key insights on regulatory matters and help ensure the company’s international activities, including trade and market entry, are aligned with local laws and international regulations,” Zulueta says.

Bimba Y Lola’s rapid international growth and commitment to preserving its creative and sustainable identity requires a keen legal strategy. Zulueta’s expertise is vital in safeguarding the company’s intellectual property, including trademarks and designs, and addressing legal issues related to marketing, advertising, and e-commerce in global markets.

Protecting intellectual property across borders

Under Zulueta’s leadership, Bimba Y Lola has seen successful expansion into new territories, including Europe, Asia, and the Americas. One of the key legal projects Zulueta has managed is the global protection of the brand’s intellectual property portfolio. This includes trademark registrations, enforcing anti-counterfeit strategies, and tackling issues around copyright infringement, all of which are essential for preserving the integrity of the Bimba Y Lola brand worldwide.

Another crucial area of focus for Zulueta is navigating complex international commercial contracts and partnerships. His legal acumen is vital when entering into retail and franchise agreements, ensuring that the terms align with the company’s values and growth aspirations while mitigating legal risks. With Bimba Y Lola’s increasing presence in e-commerce, Zulueta has also managed legal matters related to digital platforms, data protection laws, and consumer rights, allowing the company to operate smoothly across different regions.

“At Bimba Y Lola, we protect our brand’s integrity globally by prioritizing IP security, strategic contracts, and compliance, ensuring our growth aligns with the values our customers rely on,” Zulueta says.

Zulueta’s work on mergers and acquisitions has also significantly contributed to the company’s portfolio. He has been responsible for conducting due diligence, overseeing contract negotiations, and ensuring Bimba Y Lola’s M&A strategies align with its expansion goals. This level of strategic input has been essential as the company navigates the competitive landscape of the fashion industry.

Shaping a high-performing legal team

Zulueta has significantly shaped the legal department at Bimba Y Lola. He has built and maintained a high-performing legal team capable of handling a diverse range of legal issues within a fast-paced fashion industry. By fostering a culture of collaboration, integrity, and proactive problem-solving, Zulueta has created an environment where his team can thrive.

Regarding recruitment, Zulueta has been instrumental in identifying and attracting top-tier legal talent to the organization. He ensures that team members have a deep understanding of the fashion industry and are equipped with the legal knowledge needed to address the complexities of global retail operations. Zulueta values continuous professional development, ensuring that his team stays updated with evolving legal trends and industry-specific challenges.

Retention is another key area in which Zulueta has made significant contributions. He believes in cultivating an inclusive and supportive workplace where legal professionals can grow, contribute meaningfully, and align with the company’s vision. Through mentorship programs, professional development opportunities, and a work culture that promotes work-life balance, Zulueta ensures that his team remains committed to the legal department’s goals and the broader mission of Bimba Y Lola.

“A strong legal team is built on trust, collaboration, and a commitment to growth. By fostering these values, we create an environment where our team can thrive and meet the unique challenges of the fashion industry,” Zulueta says.

A unique path through law and creativity

Zulueta’s fascination with law began with a lifelong interest in fairness. This interest, influenced by his family’s background, guided him toward a career in business and corporate law. He earned a Master’s in Commercial Law from the University of Navarra and then joined Deloitte Legal, where he spent six years specializing in M&A and corporate transactions across diverse industries.

Though Zulueta had not initially considered an in-house role, a headhunter’s invitation to join Bimba Y Lola offered an intriguing challenge to establish and lead their legal department. Embracing the role, he created the department from scratch and has expanded it into a team of seven, supporting the business across areas like contracts, e-commerce, and intellectual property, an especially vital area as Bimba Y Lola has become one of the most counterfeited brands in Spain, with similar challenges in Mexico and Chile.

Outside work, Zulueta is a skilled 3D artist and a Microsoft Authorized Developer for Flight Simulator add-ons, combining his love for aviation and technical creativity. His interests include photography, surfing, and playing guitar in two bands, adding depth to a career built on dedication and diverse passions.

“Embrace unexpected opportunities; they often lead to the most growth. Building something from the ground up takes passion and perseverance. Keep learning, stay curious, and let your unique interests deepen everything you do,” Zulueta says.

Testimonials

As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
