Javier Oroz – AXA Mexico

When he last spoke to Vanguard in August 2018, Javier Oroz and his team at AXA Mexico were creating a repository of the judicial rulings and case law that his company had dealt with in previous years. Six years later, Mexico had a very relevant change in its judicial system and this repository will be key for Javier’s team to face this new procedural challenge.

Since then, Oroz’s role has transformed into something far beyond what he initially imagined at the beginning of his career as a lawyer. His journey reflects the arc of a litigator who had a strong vocation in law but now stands in Mexico at the heart of one of the largest insurance companies in the world leading not just the whole spectrum of a legal department but a cross-disciplinary team that includes crisis management, anti-fraud, compliance, risk management, internal control, and public affairs.

“Over the years, I have been entrusted with responsibilities far beyond traditional legal boundaries, shaping me into a multifaceted executive with a unique view on leadership, talent development, strategic vision and business acumen,” Oroz tells Vanguard during an interview from his office in Mexico’s capital city.

AXA Mexico is the Mexican brand of the French multinational insurance company AXA, which was founded in 1946 and brought in nearly 84 billion Euros in revenue in 2023.

When Oroz began his career, he had a singular goal: to be the one of the best litigators in Mexico. The corporate world and living in a bustling city like Mexico City were never part of his ambition. But he discovered a passion for law that transcended the courtrooms.

“I am thankful that at AXA Mexico, they keep entrusting me with new and exciting roles and responsibilities beyond the legal scope,” he says with a mixture of pride and surprise, a trajectory that reflects his ability to adapt, learn and embrace change.

Today, he manages a team of more than 180 professionals and directs seven professional families that include highly specialized areas like risk management—a responsibility that he never thought he would enjoy so much. When his CEO asked him to oversee risk management, Oroz recalls thinking it was “a crazy idea” for a lawyer to head a department of mostly actuaries. Yet, his collaborative approach and the talent of his teams brought the two fields closer together, merging technical and legal perspectives plus boosting soft skills on a technical team ultimately helping AXA Mexico integrate a more business-oriented risk culture.

Cultivating talent

Oroz has found a new vocation which is to support and develop talent and championed a leadership style grounded in empowerment and trust through this expanded role. He spends much of his time meeting and talking with his teams, creating open channels of communication and avoiding micromanagement. His team, many of whom have worked alongside him for nearly a decade, operates with a shared understanding of priorities and processes. Together, they have built a framework where issues are escalated efficiently and information flows smoothly.  This method of working without surprises or unnecessary involvement in every detail has fostered a sense of ownership and maturity among his team, allowing each member the empowerment and accountability to lead and manage their areas effectively.

Oroz’s recalls his role as crisis leader in shaping AXA’s Mexico pandemic response further underscored his capacity as a leader. He and his team quickly adapted to the challenges implementing for the first time remote work, instituting flexible policies to support work-life balance and mental health. He became a strong sponsor of AXA Mexico´s home-office culture, even before remote work law came into effect. Reflecting on this, Oroz notes the importance of balance in the workplace. The result is a committed team that values its professional and personal lives, returning to work with renewed energy and dedication.

“It was the one of the most difficult times I’ve experienced as a professional,” Oroz says.

His history and values deeply influence Oroz’s approach to leadership. Although he comes from a family of ranchers, he was drawn to law rather than agriculture and cattle farming, pursuing his passion with a drive for excellence. As a student, he consistently ranked in the top his classes, both in Mexico, and the U.S. and his commitment to hard work extended to all aspects of his life.

“Identifying strengths and positioning team members for success is an important part of being a leader,” Oroz says.

He emphasizes hiring for attitude over knowledge, finding value in each person’s potential, and cultivating a strong sense of responsibility and accountability.

Oroz has been a passionate and pioneer on pro bono programs in corporations in Mexico and he has been awarded as Corporate Social Responsibility Lawyer in Latin America by Chambers and Partnes for his role in supporting and empowering female talent at AXA Mexico. His team, which he calls a world-class team—benefits from a high degree of flexibility in where they work and how they shape their career paths. This support has helped AXA Mexico to become a leader in inclusivity and progressive workplace policies, setting a benchmark in Mexico’s corporate landscape. The family legacy

Oroz was born and raised in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, which shares a border to the north with Arizona. His heritage and family history are a crucial part of his life, and Oroz returns home as much as possible to visit family and friends and check on his other passion: his family’s Bacanora brand Santo Cuviso, a Mexican agave spirit similar  to mezcal and tequila made with a endemic agave from Sonora and that has a unique denomination of origin —In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Oroz remains connected to his family roots and has been instrumental in the international expansion of his bacanora Santo Cuviso. The brand is available in Mexico, the U.S., Canada, Japan and parts of Europe. This project, driven by family and cultural pride, keeps him grounded and dedicated to preserving a legacy that spans generations. Oroz hopes his children will continue this heritage, blending professional success with a deep respect for family traditions.

As he looks back on his journey, Oroz reflects on how the role of an in-house lawyer in Mexico has evolved. His intense experiences and international collaborations have broadened his perspective, allowing him to approach regulatory and business challenges with insight beyond legal advice. He sees himself not merely as a counsel but as a strategist and mentor, cultivating a high-performance culture that values flexibility, resilience, and excellence. From aspiring litigator to corporate leader well known in the whole insurance market in Mexico, Oroz’s story is one of constant growth—a testament to how curiosity, adaptability, and a solid commitment to people can redefine a career.

“I am often asked what is next for me in my professional career and the answer is that I really don’t know, the only thing I have always aspired to is to transcend, which is why I am extremely grateful to my team, to AXA and to my family for being part of that next step to transcendence,” he says.
