In the high-speed, high-stakes world of customer experience technology, legal counsel is often called upon to decipher complexity, mitigate risk, and enable deal flow. However, legal excellence is only part of the equation for Joe Hynes, managing corporate counsel for North America at Genesys. What truly sets him apart is his deep-rooted commitment to empathy, both toward clients and colleagues, as well as the evolving legal profession.
As North America’s head of commercial legal operations, Hynes leads a team of four attorneys and collaborates with five additional professionals focused on commercial operations. In this role, he navigates a dense landscape of transactional negotiations, oversees strategic legal initiatives, and plays a key part in one of the world’s most innovative and fast-growing customer experience companies.
“It’s amazing to me to think I can work in essentially the same legal team for 13 years, yet every day is different and exciting,” Hynes says. “That’s the tech world, though, and it’s as true as ever now as we move from the cloud transformation era to the AI era.”
Genesys, a global leader in AI-powered customer experience (CX) and call center software, helps organizations transform how they engage with customers and employees. With solutions such as Genesys Cloud CX, Genesys Multicloud CX, and Genesys DX, the company enables personalized, scalable experiences across channels, industries, and geographies. Initially founded in 1990 and now privately held following a series of acquisitions, Genesys serves businesses of all sizes through cloud and hybrid platforms.
Since joining Genesys—originally through Interactive Intelligence, which Genesys acquired in 2016—Hynes has watched the company evolve from a workforce of 3,500 to over 8,000 employees. That growth trajectory has mirrored his own, from intern to in-house counsel to one of the company’s most respected legal leaders.
“I started as an intern for Interactive Intelligence in 2010,” Hynes recalls. “It was a tough legal job market then, but I was lucky. I got to stay on, pass the bar and grow with the company.”
That longevity and deep institutional knowledge have given Hynes a strong foundation to lead, particularly in an industry defined by rapid innovation and complexity. His leadership has been instrumental in significant deals, including one of the largest commercial transactions in Genesys’ history. This nine-month negotiation tested his legal skills and empathetic mindset alike.
“My goal is to get to an agreement that works for everybody,” he says. “You might not save the world, but you’re helping shape people’s livelihoods. That matters.”
Empathy as a strategic advantage
For Hynes, empathy isn’t a soft skill—it’s a competitive edge. In contract negotiations, internal collaborations, and team leadership, understanding others’ perspectives is fundamental to success.
“Empathy is at the heart of every negotiation,” he says. “Both finalizing a deal and maintaining a healthy long-term relationship with a customer require an agreement that works for both sides. It’s not just about getting to ‘yes’—it’s about understanding why someone’s asking for something and their underlying need. That approach leads to better deals and stronger relationships.”
As Genesys continues transforming into an AI-driven enterprise, Hynes plays a key role in aligning legal strategy with business growth. He sees empathy as essential to that alignment—how the company interacts with customers and how the legal team supports sales, operations and product development.
He also applies the same empathetic lens internally, investing time and energy into the growth and well-being of his team. Whether conducting one-on-one meetings, leading weekly team calls, or organizing fun Zoom trivia nights, Hynes intentionally fosters connection and support.
“I insist on weekly one-on-ones with everyone on my team,” he says. “They have an open invitation to talk to me anytime. That’s my mentality—even if we were all in the same office.”
Although his team operates almost remotely, Hynes emphasizes the importance of occasional in-person gatherings. “We try to meet in person at least twice a year,” he says. “When you’ve met someone face-to-face, it changes how you talk to them six months later. Your tone is more personal and more empathetic. That matters.”
His empathetic approach internally doesn’t stop with his team either.
“Empathy should inform how you interact with everyone professionally. I even measure the performance of our external counselors and vendors largely on empathy. GTC Law Group is our primary firm for additional deal negotiation work because I trust their attorneys to negotiate with the same level of empathy we instill at Genesys. We utilize contracts and data analytics firms like Brightleaf Solutions, which help us understand how we can better serve our customers and internal clients with empathy. It really is a holistic approach.”
Building for the future with AI
Just as empathy is a defining value for Hynes, innovation is a defining feature of his work at Genesys. One of his team’s most exciting current projects involves developing a custom, AI-powered legal tool to streamline transactional work and capture institutional knowledge.
“We’re building what’s essentially a legal ChatGPT,” he explains. “It’s designed to help our commercial legal team search and retrieve relevant clauses, proposals, and negotiation strategies based on past deals.”
The initiative stems from a broader company-wide AI task force that drives operational efficiency across departments. For the legal team, that means finding ways to keep pace with the increasing volume and complexity of deals—without necessarily adding more headcount.
“We can’t hire lawyers at the same rate the business is growing,” Hynes says. “So, we need smarter systems. The AI platform allows our attorneys to access prior arguments, alternative clauses quickly, and suggested language. It helps them get up to speed faster and spend more time thinking strategically.”
He believes that when used thoughtfully, AI is a powerful tool—not a threat to legal practice. “AI can make you a more efficient lawyer,” he says. “But you have to know how to use it. You still need judgment, instincts, and an understanding of the business context.”
The tool also helps onboard new attorneys more efficiently, accelerating their ability to contribute meaningfully.
“Some of this is built on previous contracts, but just because we agreed to something in the past doesn’t mean we have to agree now,” he notes. “That’s where legal experience and human judgment still play a big role.”
Leadership grounded in people
Despite his achievements, Hynes remains grounded, attributing much of his success to the people around him—and the culture of collaboration and trust that defines Genesys.
“I’ve been lucky,” he says. “The company has been good to me, and the people have been so good to me. That’s a big part of why I’ve stayed and want to continue growing here.”
His focus on leadership development is evident in how he approaches mentorship, team building and performance. Whether sharing negotiation tips at the end of team calls or encouraging cross-functional collaboration with the sales team, Hynes constantly seeks ways to elevate those around him.
“I think you can teach someone to be a good negotiator, more than most people think,” he says. “You can teach people how to build rapport, listen and be strategic. It’s about giving them the tools—and trusting them to grow.”
Recognition has followed. In one of the most meaningful acknowledgments of his career, Hynes received the North America MVP award from the Genesys sales team—an honor that speaks to the impact of his work and his ability to support the business with empathy and precision.
“It meant a lot to be recognized by the sales team,” he says. “It reinforced for me that when you treat people with respect, listen and care about outcomes—not just contracts—you can make a real difference.”
As Genesys continues to lead the way in AI-powered customer experience, Hynes proves that legal leadership grounded in empathy and innovation isn’t just effective—it’s essential.
In a world where technology moves fast, and human connection often gets lost, Hynes is building something lasting: a team, a culture and a way of working that puts people first.
