Kate Peterson – Brown University

Kate Peterson knows that she can handle any challenge that comes her way as the deputy general counsel for litigation and employment law at Brown University. In March 2020, Peterson was diagnosed with breast cancer—her surgery was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, when facing a complex legal matter or when something throws her for a loop, she looks back on her cancer battle and realizes that everything else is easy.

“After my diagnosis, I knew I had to keep focused on my work and help ensure student safety during the health crisis,” Peterson tells Vanguard during a summer interview from Rhode Island. “Battling cancer has made other challenges seem simple in comparison, and that has helped me the past few years.”

Peterson oversees various responsibilities, primarily focusing on labor and employment matters. She is a key advisor to the University’s administration, collaborating closely with division heads, human resources, compliance personnel, and other stakeholders. Her expertise enables her to provide timely and practical counsel on various issues, ensuring that the University navigates complex legal challenges confidently and clearly. Peterson’s role extends beyond legal compliance; she actively shapes policies and practices that reflect the University’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

Driving change in higher education

Since joining Brown in May 2019, Peterson has been involved in many projects showcasing her extensive experience in labor and employment law. One of her most notable achievements was her leadership in a six- to eight-month negotiation process that resulted in a pivotal agreement for the University. This complex undertaking required legal understanding and strategic collaboration with multiple departments, underscoring her ability to manage intricate legal processes effectively. She is currently handling class action litigations related to Ivy League schools’ scholarship practices, positioning Brown at the forefront of critical discussions regarding fairness and accessibility in higher education.

Peterson’s proactive approach to legal challenges is further exemplified by her dedication to training and development initiatives within the University. Recognizing that informed employees are better equipped to navigate legal complexities, she regularly conducts training sessions for staff and managers. These sessions cover various topics, from wage and hour issues to the implications of social media in the workplace and related privacy concerns. She cultivates a culture of open communication and learning by fostering an environment where questions are welcomed. In addition to her legal responsibilities, Peterson is invested in the University’s leadership, recruiting, and retention efforts. The recent transition in leadership within the legal department has brought renewed energy and excitement to Peterson’s role. With a new general counsel set to join the team, Peterson looks forward to collaborating with another strong female leader who shares her vision for fostering a dynamic and effective legal team. Throughout her career, Peterson has navigated numerous challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and significant Supreme Court rulings affecting higher education, such as the affirmative action ruling. She believes that maintaining a safe environment for students is paramount. By working closely with university leaders to develop policies that balance these complex concerns, Peterson demonstrates her commitment to creating a supportive campus culture.

In her role, Peterson finds fulfillment in knowing that her work directly impacts the lives of students and staff.

A journey of growth and impact

Peterson’s interest in law stemmed from a desire to understand the intricacies of public policy and its societal impacts. She pursued this passion at Providence College, earning a magna cum laude B.A. in Political Science. Continuing her education at Boston University, she obtained a J.D. from the School of Law and an M.P.H. from the School of Public Health, where she was a health law fellow and served as a note editor for the American Journal of Law & Medicine.

Following her education, Peterson spent seven years in private practice before transitioning to Citizens Bank as vice president and senior counsel for litigation and employment law for over 12 years. In May 2019, she joined Brown University as the deputy general counsel, managing a diverse litigation portfolio, addressing issues ranging from slip-and-fall incidents to antitrust matters. This role allowed her to directly impact the university community, providing a fulfilling change from her corporate background.

Outside of her professional life, Peterson is a devoted mother to her two sons. They recently created lasting memories while exploring World War II history in Normandy, France. She also teaches business law as an adjunct professor at Providence College, shaping future legal professionals with her extensive experience.
