Katina Thornock is that type of leader as senior vice president and deputy general counsel at Providence St. Joseph Health, one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in the United States. With a footprint that spans seven states, Providence oversees a vast network of over 122,000 caregivers, 51 hospitals, and more than 1,000 clinics. The organization is committed to providing healthcare to all, particularly the poor and vulnerable, embodying a values-driven approach to healthcare. Thornock plays a crucial role in shaping strategy, overseeing litigation, and contributing to the organization’s growth and efficiency within this complex system.
Thornock’s role goes beyond overseeing the litigation function; she is a strategic advisor to the executive team and collaborates regularly with the C-suite and other leaders to address challenges across all business areas. Her ability to contribute to growth strategies while helping ensure the legal department’s alignment with Providence’s mission is a core element of her leadership. She also lends her expertise to transactional lawyers, helping them assess deals, mitigate risk, and ensure compliance with Providence’s stringent regulatory environment. A steward of the organization’s resources,
“Right now, I am focused on efficiency and process improvements, striving to do more with less while upholding Providence’s high standards of care,” Thornock tells Vanguard during an interview in August.
Guiding organizational change
One of Thornock’s most significant early projects at Providence was the creation of a centralized litigation function, which had not existed before her arrival. Given the scale of the organization, this was a monumental task that required a deep understanding of Providence’s structure, values, and legal needs. She built a dedicated team of attorneys focused on litigation, collaborating closely with healthcare operations lawyers, specialists, and paralegals to ensure cohesive legal support across the organization. This centralized function brings greater consistency and efficiency to Providence’s legal operations, ensuring that the organization can more effectively manage the legal challenges of running such an extensive healthcare system.

Another key project was leading the legal team on the divestment of Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital, a significant initiative within Thornock’s first year at Providence. Hoag was a crucial part of Providence’s system, but after partnering for many years on behalf of the community, the two organizations decided to return to independent operations. Thornock guided this complex process, working closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition. This project demonstrated her expertise in managing high-stakes legal issues, underscoring her ability to lead through significant organizational change.
“Building a centralized litigation team was about more than just legal structure; it was about creating consistency, efficiency, and alignment with our mission. It allowed us to tackle challenges with greater clarity and purpose, ensuring we could better support the organization at every level.” Thornock says.
Shaping a collaborative and thriving legal culture
Thornock’s leadership approach is rooted in her belief in servant leadership and her commitment to being the kind of leader she has always admired. As someone who has successfully led teams throughout her career, she places great importance on engaging her team, understanding their strengths, and putting them in positions where they can succeed. She has a talent for building consensus and driving alignment among her team and across departments, which has been critical in fostering a collaborative, high-performing work environment at Providence.

In the legal department, recruitment and retention are top priorities for Thornock. With a legal team of 38 attorneys, many working remotely across California and other states, she understands the importance of creating a culture that supports growth, development, and a sense of belonging. She is invested in the professional development of her team, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive.
“Our team focus on leadership development, and my ability to place team members in roles that align with their skills and career goals help make our department a place where talented lawyers can grow and contribute meaningfully to Providence’s mission,” Thornock explains.
Thornock says she is excited about the continued opportunities for growth and innovation in healthcare. She helps to support the organization in finding more efficient and bespoke ways to deliver healthcare, especially as the population ages and the healthcare landscape evolves. Her ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on leadership has made her an invaluable asset to Providence, and she remains committed to leading with purpose and driving positive change within the organization.
Driven by purpose
Thornock’s interest in law began at a young age, despite having no lawyers in her family and not meeting one until law school. Drawn to the analytical way lawyers think and their ability to make a difference, she knew early on that this was her path. After earning degrees from the University of Washington and Seattle University School of Law, she started her legal career as a prosecuting attorney in Washington, where she thrived in the courtroom.

Her next move took her into private practice, first at Reed McClure and later at Cozen O’Connor, where she focused on commercial litigation and was mentored by strong female attorneys. In 2009, Thornock joined Starbucks, ultimately becoming managing director, corporate counsel, global litigation, and building business and leadership skills while mentoring others.
In 2019, after her mother’s passing, Thornock was moved by the care her mother received and decided to pivot her career to healthcare. She joined Providence in December 2020, drawn to its mission of providing healthcare to poor and vulnerable populations. By June 2023, she had risen to senior vice president, deputy general counsel, overseeing the litigation function and serving on the leadership team in the legal department of a complex, highly regulated organization.
“Embracing lifelong learning and complexity, driven by a genuine love for people and a desire to make a positive impact, has paved the way for my success and enhanced my ability to influence my teams and organizations effectively,” Thornock says.
