KLAS is not just the name of Kirk Halpin’s family of companies (named by using the first letter of his name, his wife’s and his two sons). Class is exactly what Halpin and his team members exhibit across his businesses and the kind of service he expects to continue to deliver to clients and customers well into the future.

The flagship business, the Law Offices of Kirk Halpin & Associates, P.A., launched in 2004 after Halpin spent over eight years in private practice with well-established law firms in Baltimore. Today, the Clarksville, Maryland-based firm creatively partners with individuals and businesses by providing high-quality, result-oriented legal representation. The law firm has the experience to enable its clients to successfully navigate the increasingly complex and ever-changing maze of real estate, finance and general business law.
“We have the knowledge and experience required to provide clear, practical advice to help our clients achieve their business goals, whether that involves the review and negotiation of a simple lease or the drafting of a complex contract to buy or sell real estate,” Halpin tells Vanguard during an interview from his office in Clarksville, a city between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
The KLAS Family of Companies represents a dynamic and diverse group of businesses unified by a commitment to collaboration, innovation, and tangible impact. Encompassing a law firm, a title company, real estate brokerage, commercial loan brokerage, real estate development ventures and investment opportunities, KLAS operates as a one-stop shop for legal and real estate-related services. Its ventures include developing residential subdivisions, building medical and office spaces, and managing projects such as apartment complexes and retail centers throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
What sets KLAS apart is its unique culture of inclusion and growth; employees are not just workers but active participants in the company’s success. Through profit-sharing plans and opportunities to invest in projects, even with minimal contributions, the KLAS Family of Companies foster a sense of ownership and pride among their team. With a focus on building a legacy, KLAS reflects Halpin’s vision of creating recession-resistant businesses that uplift employees and the communities they serve.
More than just a business
Halpin, officially the managing partner of The Law Offices of Kirk Halpin & Associates, P.A. and founder of the KLAS Family of Companies, has built more than a business empire—he’s cultivated a workplace culture that resonates deeply with the values of collaboration, growth, and community. Under Halpin’s leadership, the organization has grown into a dynamic network of businesses able to serve the wider real estate industry, all tied together by a shared ethos of mutual support and a familial environment.
From the moment Halpin started his law firm over 20 years ago, the emphasis has been on creating a work culture where every individual feels valued and empowered. His leadership style reflects his belief in the importance of mentorship and trust. Halpin credits much of his success to his ability to identify and nurture leaders within his team.
“The difference between EQ and IQ has been crucial for me,” he shares, emphasizing his focus on emotional intelligence when identifying potential in employees. Halpin’s wife, Laura, often joins interviews, offering another perspective and contributing to the hiring process. This attention to detail has resulted in a team where employees know their lanes, understand expectations and thrive in their roles.
While staying focused on what they do best is important, Halpin understands that empowering his team to go above and beyond is what makes any company successful. Everyone pitches in to push the companies forward, and Halpin says that no matter a person’s title, everyone on the teams is more than happy to step in and handle a task, no matter the size or scope of the work.
This focus on nurturing talent has created long-term loyalty among employees. His executive assistant has been with him for more than 14 years, and another administrative team member for 12—a testament to the supportive environment at KLAS. While there have been hires that didn’t work out, Halpin views each challenge as an opportunity to refine processes and find the right people. Remarkably, some who left the organization have returned, drawn back by the collegial and familial atmosphere.
“We’re always looking to develop relationships and watch them grow. Our businesses do best when we have built and fostered relationships with our partners and clients,” Halpin explains.
Work-life balance
One of the defining characteristics of Halpin’s companies is their emphasis on work-life balance. Halpin himself lives just eight minutes from the law firm’s office, and most of his 22 employees live within a 15- to 30-minute radius. This proximity supports the firm’s hybrid work model, allowing employees to work remotely when necessary. The team also bonds through quarterly gatherings, from local vineyard visits to unique outings like trivia nights and instructional painting events. These experiences, paired with weekly fruit deliveries, regular team lunches create a sense of community that is rare in corporate environments.
The family-oriented culture extends to profit-sharing and investment opportunities within the organization. Employees are encouraged to participate in KLAS real estate projects, whether through development ventures, hard-money lending or property investments. From medical buildings to neighborhood developments, the tangible nature of these projects allows employees to feel a direct connection to the organization’s successes. Halpin’s philosophy of “a rising tide lifts all boats” ensures that everyone benefits, fostering a sense of shared purpose.
In addition to a generous base salary and commissions resulting from helping generate cross-referrals to other companies within the KLAS Family of Companies, employees also receive a comprehensive benefit package which includes medical, dental and vision coverage, short-term disability, a 401(k) with employee matching, a life insurance policy and an allowance for maintaining any existing licenses as well as pursuing additional training opportunities.
Giving back
Beyond fostering internal growth, Halpin’s companies are deeply rooted in giving back. Halpin and his wife instill in their children the importance of caring for others and believing in karma—a philosophy that extends to their professional lives. This mindset has shaped how the KLAS Family of Companies interact with their clients and the broader community. Halpin often serves as a trusted advisor, not just an attorney, for many of the law firm’s clients. His role extends to being an outside general counsel for several organizations, exemplifying the firm’s holistic approach to client relationships.
“I’ve learned so much from seeing things from this side, and I have become a much better lawyer and leader through this experience,” Halpin says.
Halpin’s ability to manage multiple ventures stems from his focus on collaboration and innovation. He fosters creativity within his team, encouraging them to develop efficient and innovative ways of tackling challenges. Whether it’s refining loan tracking methods or sharing feedback on real estate tenants, employees are empowered to contribute ideas that shape the company’s direction. One standout employee, described as a “Swiss Army knife,” transformed from a demure individual into a vital team member capable of solving any challenge.
Halpin’s dedication to mentorship extends beyond his own companies. He founded The Lawyer’s Alliance, a group of 12 local attorneys specializing in various fields, and a commercial real estate networking group that meets monthly. These groups serve as sounding boards and foster a spirit of collaboration within the industry, creating a network of professionals who raise each other up. Halpin recounts a recent instance where his role as a resource connected a banker and a real estate broker facing a shared challenge, illustrating the impact of his network.
Reflecting on his journey, Halpin recalls his early days at a law firm with rigid in-office requirements that offered little in terms of meaningful work-life balance. Those experiences shaped his commitment to creating a different kind of workplace—one where quality of life is a priority, and where every team member feels like part of a family. Whether it’s answering phones to set an example or celebrating an employee’s career growth, Halpin leads with humility and purpose.
As the KLAS Family of Companies continues to grow, Halpin remains focused on building a legacy that reflects his values. The organization isn’t just about pushing paper; it’s about making an impact—on employees, clients, and the community. With his wife and children as part of the journey, Halpin is not just leading a company but creating a lasting model of what a positive and empowering work environment can achieve.
Halpin enjoys how pleased his clients are with the breadth and depth of the various offerings of the KLAS Family of Companies and how he has been able to successfully partner with his clients for the past 20+ years. Halpin is looking forward to continuing to expand the KLAS Family of Companies into other real estate related fields in the coming years as well as expanding the number of team members in the organization.
“At the heart of every successful company lies a team of dedicated employees who not only contribute to growth but also embody the values of balance and well-being. As businesses expand, it’s crucial to remember that fostering an environment where employees can thrive both professionally and personally isn’t just good for morale – it’s good for business. After all, a motivated, well-supported team is the driving force behind sustainable growth, innovation, and long-term success,” Halpin says.
