Kirk Yosick – OnPoint Group

Driving growth through legal leadership

In today’s complex and ever-evolving business environment, the legal department’s role has transformed from being merely reactive to becoming a vital strategic partner in fostering growth and innovation.

Kirk Yosick – OnPoint Group

Kirk Yosick | OnPoint Group | General Counsel & Chief Administrative Officer

At the forefront of this transformation is Kirk Yosick, general counsel and chief administrative officer of OnPoint Group, who has spent nearly 30 years navigating the intersection of business and law to become a key leader within one of North America’s most dynamic companies.

OnPoint Group has become the leading facility maintenance provider, loading docks & doors, and material handling solutions. As one of the largest subject matter experts in the field, the company is a trusted supply chain partner to over 16,000 customer locations across North America. OnPoint provides comprehensive maintenance, repair, sales and installation solutions, equipment modernization, diagnostics, and data management. With a vast and interconnected network of service centers and affiliates, the company has built a reputation for delivering tailored, innovative solutions to complex operational challenges.

Yosick has been an essential force behind OnPoint Group’s incredible expansion, overseeing 40+ acquisitions and helping to grow the company to nearly $2 billion in sales. He has played a crucial role in transforming the legal team from the ground up, creating a robust in-house function that manages legal risk and actively supports business strategy and innovation. His unique background in finance, public service, and private legal practice has enabled him to approach legal challenges from a business-centric perspective, making him an invaluable asset to OnPoint’s executive leadership team.

“My participation on and contributions to the executive leadership team would certainly not have been as effective without my unique background in finance and years of private practice,” Yosick tells Vanguard magazine.

A business journey

Yosick’s journey to becoming a top legal executive is anything but conventional. Raised in Bryan, Ohio, Yosick’s early professional life was rooted in finance and business. After earning his undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Toledo, he began his career in the corporate world, quickly realizing that he had an affinity not only for numbers but also for understanding the broader business landscape. This business mindset became the foundation for his future success.

While working full-time in finance, Yosick pursued an MBA and a JD from the University of Toledo. The dual pursuit of advanced degrees while holding a demanding job speaks to his work ethic and determination.

“I’ve always been a bit of a workaholic,” Yosick admits. “I’m not someone who shies away from a challenge, and I knew that having a legal and business background would open up unique opportunities.”

After completing his education, Yosick joined a small private law firm, Gallagher & Yosick, where he worked for over 16 years, handling a diverse portfolio of corporate and estate planning work. During this time, he also served a four-year term as an elected county prosecutor, where he prosecuted felony cases and honed his courtroom skills. Balancing public service with private practice gave Yosick a unique blend of practical experience and public accountability.

“I never thought I would leave private practice,” he reflects. “I loved being in the courtroom, and being a part of my own firm gave me a sense of independence. But when OnPoint Group approached me about building their legal department, I realized it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

The connection between Yosick and OnPoint Group was established through his private practice, where he served as outside counsel for the company for over a decade. The relationship grew as Yosick built a rapport with the founder, who persuaded him to come aboard in 2015 as the company’s first in-house counsel. At that point, OnPoint was a rapidly growing organization with significant legal needs but no formal legal department.

“When I joined, the company didn’t really have a legal department or even a structured HR function,” Yosick recalls. “My role was to build it all from the ground up—legal processes, risk management, HR policies. It was a massive undertaking, but it was also gratifying.”

Building a powerhouse

Yosick’s impact on OnPoint Group has been transformative. As both General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer, he oversees various functions, including legal strategy, mergers and acquisitions, human resources and risk management. He also leads a legal team that has expanded significantly under his guidance, now including a deputy general counsel, several staff attorneys, a director of risk and other key legal professionals.

“Managing a team of this size in a company with 2,000 employees requires a careful balance of strategy and hands-on leadership,” Yosick explains. “Although it can vary, I spend about 20 percent of my time on strategy/leadership issues, 30 percent dealing with HR issues, another 30 percent on legal matters and the rest on M&A. It depends on how many deals we have in the pipeline. My team’s success is my success. Without them, our legal department isn’t a trusted advisor to the business.”

Under Yosick’s leadership, OnPoint Group has executed 40+ acquisitions, bringing new companies into the fold and integrating them into OnPoint’s broader operations. This acquisition strategy has been central to OnPoint’s growth, and Yosick has played a key role in navigating the legal complexities of each deal and aligning the acquisitions with OnPoint’s long-term strategic vision.

Despite the volume and complexity of his work, Yosick remains committed to maintaining a strong organizational culture, even as the company has grown exponentially. One of the most significant challenges has been managing a hybrid workforce, especially after the shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When the pandemic hit, we didn’t have any remote workers. Suddenly, we had to adapt on the fly,” Yosick remembers. “We had to develop robust remote work policies and train managers to handle the new dynamics. It wasn’t easy, but it forced us to rethink how we collaborate and support our teams.”

Mentorship and giving back

One of the defining aspects of Yosick’s career is his dedication to mentorship. For the past 15 years, he has prioritized mentoring one to two young attorneys annually, fostering their professional growth and helping them develop practical skills and leadership qualities.

“I believe strongly in giving back to the profession,” Yosick says. “Mentoring is about more than just sharing legal knowledge. It’s about guiding young professionals to build confidence and think strategically. I try to impart the lessons I’ve learned along the way—both the successes and the mistakes.”

Yosick’s commitment to mentorship mirrors his enthusiasm for public speaking and community involvement. He frequently shares his insights on leadership and the evolving role of in-house counsel at legal conferences and professional gatherings. His approach is practical and candid, emphasizing real-world problem-solving over theoretical discussions.

“I want young attorneys to understand that being a successful in-house lawyer requires more than just knowing the law,” he says. “You must be adaptable, strategic, and willing to work to understand the business side.”

Looking ahead, Yosick sees even greater opportunities on the horizon. With OnPoint Group positioned for another round of private equity acquisition, he envisions a continued focus on strategic growth and business alignment. Personally, Yosick is also exploring the possibility of serving on corporate boards and expanding his leadership influence beyond OnPoint.

“My private practice mindset has always been business-oriented, and that’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my career,” he says. “Even though I transitioned into an in-house role, I still think like a businessperson. That perspective has helped me make better decisions and support the company’s growth.”

As OnPoint Group continues to grow and innovate, Yosick remains an integral part of its executive leadership team, guiding it through challenges while laying the groundwork for future success.

“I wouldn’t change my path for anything,” Yosick reflects. “From building the legal department from scratch to leading through acquisitions and adapting to a changing work environment. I love being part of a constantly evolving company and pushing the envelope.”

Yosick’s story is a powerful testament to how diverse professional experiences—finance, law, public service, and corporate leadership—can converge to build a thriving legal career. His strategic vision and commitment to mentorship have shaped his success and paved the way for the next generation of legal leaders. In an industry where adaptability and foresight are paramount, Yosick continues to set the standard for how legal leadership can drive business success.

When companies like OnPoint build in-house legal and HR leadership from the ground up, partnering with an experienced executive-search and legal-recruiting firm ensures they hire the right senior talent.

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.

As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
