Krista Whitaker – Chicago Bears

Driving the Chicago Bears into a new era

When Krista Whitaker joined the Chicago Bears in April 2024 as executive vice president of legal and business affairs and chief legal officer, she stepped into an organization on the cusp of dramatic transformation. For more than a century, the Bears have been synonymous with Chicago, defined by tradition, history, and winning on the field. But Whitaker entered at a moment when the franchise was redefining what it means to be an NFL team—expanding its identity from one centered solely on football to a modern sports enterprise with ambitious business and community goals.

At the heart of this transition is the Bears’ pursuit of a new stadium, a project with the potential to reshape not only the franchise but also the greater Chicago region. Soldier Field, the team’s home since 1971, holds immense sentimental value, yet its limitations—capacity constraints, lack of modern amenities, and city ownership—leave the Bears without control over revenue streams or programming.

“We’re being intentional in everything we do,” Whitaker says. “We’re balancing the interests of the McCaskey family, the city of Chicago, and our fans—making sure each voice is heard.”

The stakes couldn’t be higher. As the Bears focus on building a new home, the project demands navigating complex legal frameworks, political negotiations, community relations, and multi-billion-dollar financial commitments. Whitaker’s ability to serve as both legal strategist and business partner has placed her at the center of this bold chapter.

The complexity of a new stadium deal

The stadium initiative represents both opportunity and risk for the Bears. Like other NFL franchises that have pursued privately financed venues, the Bears see a new stadium as a pathway to independence, long-term revenue growth, and enhanced fan experiences. Yet the process is fraught with challenges.

Negotiations with Arlington Heights officials, city representatives, and local communities require meticulous alignment across legal, business, and political fronts. Whitaker oversees the legal frameworks that underpin these conversations, ensuring compliance with existing agreements—like the Soldier Field lease—while preparing for a potential $2 billion investment in Illinois’ economy. Each step demands a careful balance between ambition and obligation.

Her previous experience at Proskauer Rose, the Miami Heat, and navigating complex municipal structures prepared her for this moment. From stadium financing deals to naming rights negotiations, Whitaker has seen how sports venues can catalyze local economies while redefining fan engagement. But she also recognizes the emotional intensity surrounding such projects.

“There’s always a visceral reaction when a team talks about moving into a new stadium in a new location,” she notes. “People care deeply about their teams, and it’s our job to show how this will benefit the community long-term.”

A successful outcome would mean more than just a modern stadium; it would mean new revenue streams, expanded community impact, and positioning Chicago as a premier host for marquee events like the Super Bowl, the NFL Draft, Final Four, College Football Playoffs, and international competitions. Whitaker has already submitted the Bears’ intent to bid on hosting the 2031 Super Bowl, underscoring the scale of the organization’s aspirations.

Building legal for the future

While the stadium project captures headlines, Whitaker’s responsibilities extend far beyond it. She leads a legal department that has evolved into a business-minded, strategy-driven partner for the entire organization. Her team of four—including a recently hired vice president of legal—touches every part of the business: governance, media rights, security, sponsorships, press, and ownership issues.

Rebranding the department as “legal and business affairs” reflects her philosophy. “We are a service-based function, but we really are a business partner,” she explains. “I’m thinking about how we can strategize to grow revenue and grow the brand.”

By integrating legal expertise into broader decision-making, Whitaker ensures that the Bears’ business ventures—whether in media, sponsorships, or community development—are built on solid foundations.

Her people-first approach also defines the way she manages her department. She prioritizes accessibility, collaboration, and trust, encouraging her team to listen, ask smart questions, and seek solutions rather than roadblocks.

“I’m relentless about getting to yes,” she says. “I always believe there’s a way to figure things out—and when we do, everyone wins.”

This mindset is particularly important as the Bears undergo significant organizational transitions under president and CEO Kevin Warren. The front office is modernizing operations, integrating football and business functions, and exploring innovative ways to attract and retain top talent. Whitaker sees legal as central to supporting these shifts, offering stability and strategy in equal measure.

Balancing legacy & innovation

Few franchises carry the history and cultural weight of the Chicago Bears. Founded in 1920 by George Halas, the team remains family-owned, with a legacy that stretches across generations of fans. Preserving that tradition while evolving into a modern sports brand requires both sensitivity and vision—a balance Whitaker is uniquely positioned to provide.

Her background—from growing up in Texas to earning a business degree at Texas A&M and a JD from Stanford Law School—gave her both analytical rigor and a grounding in the human side of leadership. Having played sports in high school, she appreciates the discipline, teamwork, and accountability required for success—values she now applies to the front office.

Whitaker also brings the perspective of a working parent navigating high-stakes leadership while raising young children. She joined the Bears while pregnant with her second child and often speaks about the importance of empathy, emotional intelligence, and trustworthiness in leadership. These qualities resonate in an industry where women remain underrepresented at the executive level.

As she looks ahead, Whitaker sees the Bears as not just keeping pace with modern sports organizations but setting a new standard.

“This is about continuing to evolve as a historical organization to a transformational and dynamic brand while also remembering and embracing our legacy,” she says.

That vision includes cross-pollination between football and business operations, where lessons in accountability, talent development, and teamwork can benefit both players on the field and employees in the office.

A franchise in transition

The Chicago Bears are one of the NFL’s founding franchises and one of its most storied teams, with nine championships, including a Super Bowl victory in 1985. Beyond their rich history, they represent a cornerstone of Chicago’s identity, drawing generations of fans who see the Bears as more than a football team—they are a civic institution.

Today, under the leadership of Warren and executives like Whitaker, the Bears are embracing change. From exploring a new stadium home to expanding business lines and investing in community engagement, the organization is redefining its role as both a competitive football team and a dynamic sports enterprise.

The journey is not without obstacles: complex negotiations, public scrutiny, financial risks, and the ever-present pressure to win. Yet with Whitaker’s steady hand, the Bears are demonstrating that tradition and transformation need not be in conflict. They can honor their past while charging into the future.

“No longer in hibernation,” as Whitaker puts it, the Chicago Bears are positioning themselves as a team that not only competes on game days but also leads off the field—with vision, energy, and a fierce commitment to their city and fans.

Testimonials

As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.

It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
