At the forefront of iFood’s expansion into financial services, Luiz Uehara is the legal manager, guiding the company through a transformative period. iFood, a leading food delivery and technology company in Brazil, is increasingly positioning itself as a significant player in the financial sector through its subsidiary, iFood Pago. This initiative aims to revolutionize payment and credit solutions for restaurants, providing them with essential financial services in a market traditionally underserved by banking institutions.

In his role, Uehara is crucial to navigating the complex legal landscape associated with this transition. His primary responsibilities include ensuring compliance with stringent regulatory requirements while supporting the company’s innovation efforts. The company’s internal challenge revolves around establishing a comprehensive set of regulated activities within iFood Pago. This includes setting up credit and payment solutions for the iFood ecosystem, which requires complex regulatory requirements and the development of teams with specific knowledge from scratch.
“My approach is to integrate legal considerations early in the process, adopting a proactive, legal-by-design mindset that aligns legal support with business objectives,” Uehara explains.
Enhancing efficiency
Uehara’s team is crucial in introducing and managing new products and services within highly regulated sectors. This includes areas such as meal vouchers, credit and payment solutions, where stringent regulatory oversight and compliance are paramount. The task involves translating intricate business plans into actionable insights that regulatory agencies and industry partners can understand and approve. This process requires Uehara’s team to navigate a complex regulatory landscape that lacks established benchmarks and precedents. The team’s approach combines technical expertise with innovative thinking to address these challenges effectively.
One of the most notable achievements under Uehara’s leadership was the successful acquisition of banking licenses from the Brazilian Central Bank. This rigorous and time-consuming process spanned over two years and was a landmark event for iFood Pago. Securing these licenses was a strategic victory that enabled iFood Pago to operate as a fully regulated financial entity. This regulatory approval is significant because it allows the company to bypass intermediary financial institutions, thereby reducing transaction fees and improving overall profitability. This achievement has set a new standard for iFood Pago, positioning it as a major player in the financial services market and paving the way for future growth and innovation.
Another critical initiative spearheaded by Uehara’s team is digitizing legal processes through artificial intelligence. Integrating AI tools into the legal framework has been a transformative move in an era where technology increasingly drives efficiency. The team has developed a sophisticated knowledge database to centralize and organize crucial information.
This database supports AI-driven tools that automate routine and repetitive tasks, such as handling standard legal queries and managing document workflows. By automating these processes, the team aims to significantly enhance operational efficiency, reduce the time spent on mundane tasks, and allocate more resources to strategic and high-value legal work. This shift improves response times and enables the team to stay agile and responsive in a fast-paced business environment.
Fostering collaboration and agility
Leadership and team dynamics are at the heart of Uehara’s role. Uehara manages a dedicated legal team of 10 professionals alongside specialists in regulatory and legal matters. His leadership approach strongly emphasizes cultivating a collaborative and agile culture within his team. This involves fostering an environment where teamwork and flexibility are prioritized and actively seeking these traits when recruiting new talent. Uehara recognizes that adapting to rapidly changing circumstances and working cohesively is crucial for success in the dynamic financial services sector.
Uehara’s leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in a commitment to professional and personal growth. He believes in creating a supportive and empowering work environment where team members are encouraged to pursue their career ambitions and personal development. This supportive approach has been instrumental in retaining top talent and has facilitated the team’s expansion through strategic acquisitions and increased responsibilities. By investing in his team’s development and well-being, Uehara strengthens its capabilities and ensures long-term stability and success.
Uehara actively seeks to create an environment where innovative thinking is celebrated. This focus on innovation and efficiency is complemented by a hands-on approach to staying engaged with his team. Uehara’s leadership is defined by his ability to balance the need for professional excellence with a genuine interest in his team members’ growth and satisfaction.
“Effective leadership fosters a collaborative culture where resilience and adaptability are encouraged and celebrated. By supporting our team’s professional and personal growth, we retain top talent and drive innovation and success in the ever-evolving financial services landscape,” Uehara says.
A journey of curiosity and adaptability
Uehara’s early exposure to the legal field came from his father, a public servant with a law degree, which ignited Uehara’s interest in how systems work. Growing up in São Paulo, he was influenced by his multicultural environment and pursued dreams of diplomacy by learning Spanish, English, French, and German.
Uehara initially studied foreign trade and worked in that field until the 2008 financial crisis prompted a shift back to law. His legal career began with an internship at a prominent São Paulo firm, followed by roles in private and in-house positions. Notably, his work at Alliar, a healthcare company linked with the Patria Investment Fund, set the stage for his role as Gympass’s first lawyer in its early startup days.
His diverse experiences and continuous learning have shaped his role at iFood. Uehara’s interests extend beyond law to global challenges and behavioral economics, reflecting his broad perspective and commitment to understanding complex issues.
