Marco Isoard – Visa

Navigating growth and legal complexity

As vice president of legal for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean at Visa, Marco Isoard is pivotal in steering the company through an increasingly complex regulatory and commercial landscape. With a career spanning civil litigation, corporate law, and financial regulation, Isoard now leads a regional legal team that helps enable Visa’s business growth while ensuring compliance and risk management across dynamic markets.

Visa, a global leader in digital payments, operates in more than 200 countries and territories, connecting consumers, merchants, financial institutions, and governments through innovative, reliable, and secure payment solutions. The company’s mission—connecting the world to enable individuals, businesses, and economies to thrive—is deeply reflected in Isoard’s work across Latin America and the Caribbean, where he supports operations in regions marked by growing regulatory sophistication and intense commercial activity.

Isoard’s legal journey began humbly at the Bufete Jurídico Gratuito of Universidad Panamericana, where he first developed a passion for civil litigation. He then shifted to corporate law at Romo, Paillés, Guzmán y González Luna, S.C., laying a foundation for the breadth of legal knowledge that would later define his in-house career. His ambition to pursue advanced legal education led him to a position at Banamex (Banco Nacional de México S.A.), where he joined the legal department and worked under some of the country’s top banking lawyers.

His tenure at Banamex marked a turning point. After two years, the bank awarded him a scholarship to study at Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his LL.M. and gained international experience working as an associate at Milbank. Upon returning to Mexico, Isoard resumed his work at Banamex, transitioning from consumer banking to corporate and real estate law. These experiences gave him a comprehensive understanding of financial institutions from the inside out—a perspective that would prove invaluable in his next chapter at Visa.

The dawn of digital payments

When a former colleague recommended him for a position at Visa, Isoard wasn’t sure what to expect. At the time, he understood the payments industry only through the lens of a traditional bank. But it was precisely this moment—just before the digital payments revolution accelerated—that offered a new professional horizon. He accepted the opportunity to lead Visa’s legal operations in Mexico, stepping into a sector on the cusp of massive transformation.

Since joining the company, Isoard’s scope has expanded beyond Mexico to include Central America and the Caribbean. His work touches nearly every part of Visa’s operations in the region—commercial contracts, regulatory strategy, marketing and sponsorships, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. He supports decision-making at the highest levels by helping the company navigate shifting legal frameworks, obtain critical licenses, and build compliant commercial partnerships.

One of Isoard’s most impactful contributions came through his leadership in implementing new payment regulations in Mexico and Costa Rica. These projects required navigating emerging regulatory environments quickly evolving from relatively unregulated to deeply complex. With help from Visa’s Global Legal team, Isoard led efforts to integrate these new requirements into company operations, enabling Visa to expand its financial capabilities while remaining compliant.

Securing a clearinghouse license in Mexico was a cornerstone of this effort—an achievement that significantly bolstered Visa’s ability to operate independently and at scale in the region. This regulatory win not only underscored the legal team’s strategic importance but also represented a major operational milestone for the company.

Isoard also played a key role in negotiating regional partnerships with major financial institutions and technology companies. These deals, often high-stakes and multifaceted, helped solidify Visa’s position in an increasingly competitive landscape. His work ensured that Visa’s commercial arrangements were legally sound, strategically aligned, and positioned for long-term growth.

Perhaps the most challenging and rewarding project he’s worked on at Visa has been the acquisition of PROSA, a major payment processor in Mexico. The deal demanded advanced legal structuring, regulatory coordination, and cross-functional collaboration. Isoard’s involvement throughout the process—from commercial agreement negotiations to integration support—proved essential to the success of the transaction and reflected the expanding role of legal in M&A execution and corporate strategy.

Shaping the future of payments

Visa’s business model depends on technical innovation and the trust it builds with partners and regulators. Isoard’s work helps maintain this trust. He and his team ensure that Visa’s commercial, sponsorship, and marketing initiatives comply with both local laws and global ethical standards. This includes protecting one of the world’s most recognizable brands and making sure all initiatives reflect Visa’s commitment to inclusive and transparent economies.

In the fast-evolving payments ecosystem, agility is critical. Isoard’s legal team supports the launch of new products and services by helping assess competition issues, guiding regulatory filings, and managing contractual obligations. Whether enabling a new technology rollout or responding to shifting legal requirements, Isoard provides Visa with the strategic counsel needed to navigate change and seize opportunity.

His team also plays a vital role in managing internal corporate matters, ensuring that the legal framework around Visa’s governance and business planning aligns with broader organizational goals. Collaborating closely with Visa’s Global Legal group, Isoard helps align local initiatives with global best practices—ensuring cohesion across regions and regulatory environments.

Rooted in growth and adaptability

Looking back, Isoard credits much of his career progression to staying open to opportunity and valuing the wisdom of others. He never planned every step in advance, but rather embraced each role and challenge with curiosity and determination. His story reflects the value of adaptability in a legal landscape where the only constant is change.

Just as important, Isoard acknowledges the support of the people around him—particularly his wife, Mariana, who temporarily paused her own career to support his studies abroad. This personal sacrifice made it possible for him to gain international credentials and experience that continue to shape his impact today.

From his early days in civil litigation to his current post as regional legal head at one of the world’s most influential financial companies, Marco Isoard’s journey offers a compelling example of how a legal career can evolve through curiosity, collaboration, and courage. At Visa, his work enables digital transformation while helping the company—and the economies it touches—thrive.

Testimonials

It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.

The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
