Mauricio López – Clara

Mauricio López | Clara | Global Legal Head

Mauricio López Villers, the global legal head at Clara, is at the heart of this transformation. Mauricio’s legal expertise is crucial in navigating the complex regulatory environment of fintech, ensuring Clara’s compliance while fostering innovation and growth.

Mauricio’s role at Clara is multifaceted. He oversees the company’s legal framework and collaborates closely with internal teams to align legal strategies with business objectives. His responsibilities include mapping legal needs, negotiating agreements, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing investment rounds. By integrating legal considerations into the company’s strategic planning, Mauricio helps Clara maintain a strong legal foundation that supports its rapid expansion and diverse product offerings.

“Navigating the complex regulatory landscape of fintech, I ensure compliance while driving innovation. By aligning legal strategies with business goals, we support Clara’s rapid growth and diverse offerings,” Mauricio says.

Innovative solutions

One of the pivotal projects Mauricio manages is all the regulatory authorization requests, a critical initiative to allow Clara to operate as a corporate financial institution. This process involves navigating a complex web of technological, legal, and human factors to secure comprehensive authorization from financial authorities. Achieving this status will enable Clara to offer its clients a broader range of valuable services.

This shift will enhance the customer experience by providing seamless and integrated services while reducing operational costs and improving overall efficiency. Mauricio’s strategic oversight drives Clara’s mission to expand its service capabilities and operational scope as the project advances.

A notable achievement under the stewardship of Clara’s legal team is the adept negotiation and structuring of various credit facilities. These agreements, forged with prestigious financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs and Accial, have secured essential operating resources for the company’s continued growth and innovation.

The legal strategy aligns with Clara’s technological innovation goals and supports its commitment to improving service quality and reducing costs. Mauricio’s role in different projects exemplifies his ability to align legal strategies with Clara’s business goals, ensuring that legal and regulatory requirements are met while driving the company’s advancements forward.

“By generating more solutions and streamlining the resources to operate them, we’re enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency, all while advancing our mission,” Mauricio says.

Building a rewarding work environment

Mauricio emphasizes the importance of hiring and retaining top talent by creating a work environment that is challenging and rewarding. Open communication, mutual respect, and teamwork are prioritized, recognizing and rewarding contributions to build a sense of belonging and loyalty. This supportive, growth-oriented environment attracts the best talent and ensures their retention and professional development.

The legal team’s biggest challenge is balancing legal compliance with a pro-business mindset. Navigating diverse legal landscapes across different regions requires agility and continuous monitoring of legal developments. By fostering a collaborative environment and leveraging his team’s expertise, Mauricio effectively manages these challenges, ensuring Clara’s success in a compliant and innovative manner.

A commitment to financial inclusion and innovation in Latin America drives Mauricio’s leadership at Clara. The tangible impact of their work on addressing real needs in the region is a source of pride and motivation for Mauricio and his team as they continue to create innovative legal infrastructures that support Clara’s mission and growth.

“Creating a work environment that’s challenging and rewarding is key to attracting and retaining top talent. Balancing legal compliance with a pro-business mindset is our biggest challenge, but by fostering collaboration and leveraging our team’s expertise, we ensure Clara’s success while driving innovation in Latin America,” Mauricio says.

His legal journey

Mauricio’s career began in litigation at various legal firms, providing him with a solid foundation in legal strategies, conflict resolution, and regulatory compliance. However, his interest in the emerging fintech industry in Mexico led him to shift his focus.

In 2017, Mauricio was invited to serve as chief legal officer for Flint, an e-wallet for college students. This role marked a significant turning point in his career. As Mexico’s fintech ecosystem evolved rapidly, Mauricio specialized in fintech law, successfully navigating the company through enacting the Mexican Fintech Law in 2018 and obtaining financial authorization for Flint, which was eventually acquired.

Following his success at Flint, Mauricio became the regulatory manager for Grin Pay. Here, he led the filing for Grin Pay’s fintech authorization, further cementing his expertise in regulatory issues.

In 2020, Mauricio joined Clara as part of its founding team, leveraging his extensive legal background and strategic thinking to establish the company from a legal and regulatory perspective.

Over the past four years, Mauricio has been instrumental in Clara’s growth and success, ensuring the company’s legal strategy and remaining compliant with ever-increasing regulations while fostering an environment where innovative ideas can thrive.

Outside of his professional life, López values a balanced life. He enjoys spending time with his son and is passionate about playing various instruments and collecting vintage music gear. His journey from litigation to a leading role in the fintech sector showcases his versatility and commitment to his professional development.

Testimonials

It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
