When Melissa Pearson joined Raptor Technologies in August 2024 as general counsel, she brought with her a career’s worth of experience in leading legal teams of technology companies through rapid growth. What she found was an organization deeply committed to protecting children and supporting schools—and a mission that aligned perfectly with her own values.
Melissa Pearson | Raptor Technologies, LLC | General Counsel
Raptor Technologies, founded in 2002, has become a global leader in school safety solutions. Serving 60,000 schools across 55 countries, the company’s integrated product portfolio encompasses software, mobile technology, training, and consultation services that span the entire school safety lifecycle—from crisis prevention and preparation to emergency response and recovery. Its offerings span emergency management, campus movement, student wellbeing, and safety training and compliance, making Raptor a trusted partner in safeguarding students and educators worldwide.
For Pearson, the connection was immediate. “We are very purpose-driven,” she says, noting that many at Raptor, including herself, are deeply passionate about education and safety.
“A lot of our people are former teachers or school personnel. They’re driven from their hearts about what we do,” Pearson explains.
That sense of mission has shaped how she approaches her role: not only as the company’s top legal officer, but also as a strategic advisor helping guide product use, streamline legal processes, and ensure Raptor’s growth strengthens its core purpose.
Supporting schools beyond the sale
One key area of support for Pearson is ensuring that schools understand how to properly use Raptor’s products. The technology—ranging from visitor management systems to behavioral threat assessment tools—is designed to keep students safe, but effectiveness depends on proper implementation.
As Raptor expands its offerings, particularly with the addition of hardware to its emergency management product line, Pearson’s legal team plays a vital role in updating contracts and related documentation to reflect new capabilities. This clarity ensures schools not only know what they’re purchasing, but also how to use it to maximize safety.
“It’s not just about closing a deal,” Pearson explains. “It’s about making sure the school understands how the product works, what its limits may be, and how to integrate it into their safety protocols.”
That level of guidance often requires balancing legal precision with practical application—something Pearson describes as “translating” between the business, legal requirements, and the real-world needs of educators.
Her approach reflects a larger philosophy: the ultimate goal is for some of Raptor’s emergency products to never be needed.
“We have the emergency management products that we hope our customers will not need to use,” she says. “However, schools should have these things in place and ready, just in case, even if they never have to use them.”
Leading legal strategy
Raptor’s growth strategy includes organic innovation and targeted acquisitions. Over the last few years, the company has acquired four businesses, each requiring careful integration of technology, teams, and culture. Pearson’s experience—ranging from general counsel roles at Borland and HomeAway.com to chief legal officer positions at Khoros and other fast-growing and acquisitive companies—has made her well-suited to lead this process.
In late 2024, she oversaw the acquisition of SmartPass, a digital hall pass and student movement tracking platform. Her role extended beyond the legal transaction. Pearson collaborated closely with HR to ensure that team members from both companies felt supported and culturally aligned.
“It’s not just about merging systems,” she notes. “It’s about making sure people feel comfortable and can continue doing their best work in a new environment.”
Acquisitions also require a long-term perspective on how new products will be marketed, supported, and integrated into Raptor’s suite of offerings. Pearson’s legal team reviews all product descriptions and promotional materials to ensure they’re accurate and not misleading—a key step in maintaining trust with school partners.
Her leadership is rooted in both high-level strategy and hands-on involvement.
“I really enjoy engaging with my internal business partners, to understand their needs and goals and finding creative and practical solutions. However, I also enjoy working on contracts and performing legal tasks. Periodically getting in the weeds helps me ensure that I understand legal needs at every level,” she says.
That dual focus allows her to guide decision-making while keeping a direct line of sight into the company’s legal operations.
Streamlining processes for greater Impact
As Raptor grows, Pearson has identified efficiency as a critical priority for the legal department. The company’s expansion means an increasing volume of customers and contracts, many of which are similar but require time-consuming negotiations. Pearson’s goal is to create a more streamlined contract process that reduces back-and-forth, improves turnaround time, and provides for a transparent and fair contracting process for customers.
She envisions an e-commerce-like approach, where standardized contracts are available for quick review and acceptance.
“If we can make it easier for schools to access our products and services, while ensuring contracts remain fair and user-friendly, we’re helping everyone,” she says.
Her legal team—currently three contract administrators and one paralegal—operates with a high level of trust and delegation. Pearson handles much of the high-level work herself, while relying on outside counsel for specialized matters. Meetings with the executive team and regular communication with other departments ensure that a deep understanding of the business and strategy informs legal decisions.
The result is a legal department that is not just reactive, but proactive—anticipating needs, mitigating risks, and aligning with Raptor’s broader strategic objectives. Pearson estimates her role is “a combination of legal work and business advising,” a balance that allows her to contribute both as a legal expert and a business partner.
Aligning passion with profession
Pearson’s career path—from political science at the University of Southern California to law school at Santa Clara University, through years in private practice and key general counsel roles—has given her the ability to navigate complex corporate environments while staying grounded in purpose. She credits an early mentor, the former general counsel at Borland, for showing her what it means to be effective in the role. He hired her and sponsored her to take over the GC role.
Her transition from Silicon Valley to Austin marked a shift toward roles where she could see the long-term impact of her work.
“In private practice, you’d do a deal and then move on to the next one,” she says. “Being in-house, you get to see the bigger picture and help with integration and meeting longer-term strategic goals.”
At Raptor, that bigger picture is clear: creating safer schools worldwide. And while Pearson’s days are filled with contracts, board meetings, and risk assessments, the mission remains the driving force.
“We want our school customers to have the entire suite, enabling them to manage their everyday security needs, while also being prepared for emergencies,” she says. “If our emergency products are in place but never needed, that’s a success.”
Her leadership reflects the idea that the best legal work supports and enables—not slows—the fast pace of innovation. By pairing her legal expertise with a genuine commitment to Raptor’s mission, Pearson is helping the company grow responsibly, integrate new technologies seamlessly, and equip schools with tools that protect the most vulnerable.
In doing so, she embodies the value of aligning passion with profession, proving that legal strategy, when rooted in purpose, can have a direct and lasting impact on communities worldwide.
