When Michael Voccola was pushing 40 and going back to school to get his law degree, he found himself surrounded by fresh-faced 20-somethings in the classroom of a brilliant professor. One day, the professor handed out a case and asked them all to read it. She then asked the class, “What would you do if […]

When Incyte, a Wilmington, Delaware-based biopharmaceutical company, began developing a therapy using a newly discovered compound called ruxolitinib more than a decade ago, its scientists found its effectiveness in treating conditions including myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera and graft-versus-host disease. That led to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval using ruxolitinib orally as Jakafi to treat […]

He’s grown his game in the past 15 years. Initially hired by the National Football League to help structure debt deals, Matthew Morgado has gone on to do much more than bring parties together for long-term investments. While that will always be among his primary responsibilities, he’s got other strategies to game-plan. There’s the emphasis […]

Michelle Orr – KeyBank

Est. reading time: 5 mins

Transitioning from USD LIBOR is one belaboring process. That’s the acronym for the London Interbank Offered Rate for U.S. Dollars, which is used to approximate the average interest rate banks pay on unsecured loans from each other. LIBOR historically has been used for many types of financial products. London label notwithstanding, the index is used […]

Millie Lukose – Tabacalera USA

Est. reading time: 5 mins

Though the art of hand-rolling premium cigars has changed very little over time, Millie Lukose says managing legal affairs as Tabacalera USA sells them online or in more than 15 cigar lounges in the U.S. presents her with evolving challenges. For instance, she can go from managing the trademarks for Altadis brands, reviewing a lease […]

Mauri Aven – Kyocera AVX Components Corp.

What capacitors do is pretty complex, especially given the components’ dimensions are often less than half a millimeter. Suffice it to say, they store electrical energy in an electric field in a microchip—which means they’re found in a lot of devices. “Anything with a chip in it will have a capacitor,” Mauri Aven says. Maureen Frangopoulos – Uber

Est. reading time: 5 mins

When Maureen Frangopoulos graduated law school and moved to Chicago, it was mid-2009 and America had plunged into a recession. Legal jobs had dried up, so she was working at the River North hotspot Hub 51, carrying sushi rolls and blue-cheese burgers across the dimly lit wood-paneled restaurant.  Still, Frangopoulos had a plan, albeit one […]

As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
