Paola Cifuentes – Anglo American

Building legal leadership that opens paths

In the fast-evolving landscape of the mining industry, legal leadership demands more than technical precision—it requires foresight, business acumen, and a deep connection with people. Paola Cifuentes, Legal Manager for Chile at Anglo American, embodies this new kind of leadership. She leads a team that manages legal risk and actively shapes the company’s strategy and values.

“Today, legal work isn’t just about interpreting laws—it’s about anticipating change, aligning with the business, and proposing the right solutions at the right time,” she says. “That’s the mindset I bring to my work, and that’s the standard I set for my team.”

Today, one of the biggest challenges is operating in a regulatory environment that is changing rapidly and becoming increasingly complex. We are seeing an unprecedented volume of new legislation—rules that are highly technical and broad in scope. This context demands a deep understanding of how legal risk intersects with business strategy.

“Our role is not to react—we need to anticipate what is coming, interpret it in the context of our operations, and guide the business in adapting,” says Cifuentes. “That requires a proactive mindset, strong collaboration across areas, and the ability to translate legal obligations into actionable business decisions. It’s about building a forward-looking culture of compliance, not just defensive.”

Her team of six lawyers brings expertise across corporate, labor, regulatory, and environmental law and is fully integrated into Anglo American’s operations.

“We are close to the business, present in the field, and involved from the outset. That allows us to be true partners—not just legal reviewers.”

A landmark alliance

Among the most significant accomplishments of her career is the Memorandum of Understanding signed with Codelco. This unprecedented agreement between two of Chile’s largest mining companies unlocked $5.5 billion in value—not through expansion but collaboration.

“It was a strategic and legal challenge of the highest complexity,” she says. “It required creativity, a deep understanding of our business environments, and building trust. We achieved a new model—proof that even in a competitive sector, collaboration can create more value than going it alone.”

The MoU has set a precedent for how the mining industry can evolve—toward alliances that are efficient, sustainable, and aligned with the country’s development.

Sustainability with substance

Another project that Paola has been involved in is Los Bronces Integrado, a long-term initiative that marks a critical evolution in how mining is approached in Chile- with sustainability placed at the center. The project’s first phase includes replacing 57,000 wood-burning heaters in Santiago’s Metropolitan Region and conserving the Los Nogales Nature Sanctuary, a vital area for local biodiversity.

“These actions go beyond regulatory requirements. “It is about taking responsibility for our broader impact and helping lead the industry toward sustainable practices.”

Beyond legal acumen, Paola is known for her leadership style—close, committed, and empowering.

“One of my greatest sources of pride is seeing my team grow. I challenge them to step outside their comfort zones, but also ensure they feel supported. I give them wings.”

She believes that technical ability must be matched by empathy, collaboration, and trust. Her approach is anchored in humility and consistency—leading by example and building confidence in those around her.

“I always say: I am nothing without my team. Our success is collective.

A role model for future generations

After more than 25 years of experience in the legal and mining sectors—both traditionally male-dominated—Paola sees one of her most important roles as opening doors for those who come next.

“I want to be a reference—not because of a title, but because of how I lead, the impact I generate, and the values I uphold.”

She regularly mentors younger lawyers and actively works to amplify the voices of women and professionals with high potential who may not yet be visible.

“There are exceptional women out there who haven’t been allowed to lead. My goal is to help change that.”

Her message to the next generation is clear: develop your skills, believe in yourself and work hard.

Outside the office, Paola finds balance through daily movement, meditation, reading, and time with her family. A mother of three and partner to her husband of 29 years, she credits her personal life as a key part of her professional strength.

“Motherhood taught me how to prioritize, stay flexible, and stay centered. It’s shaped me as a leader.”

The same thread deeply connects her professional life and personal journey: leading with purpose, clarity, and generosity.

“Leadership is not about control—it’s about enabling others, building trust, and making space for growth. That’s what I try to live every day.”

Testimonials

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.

It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
