In the fast-paced world of corporate real estate, leadership and mentorship can sometimes take a backseat to numbers and transactions. However, for Rebecca Fisk, vice president and associate general counsel for real estate and construction at Restoration Hardware (RH), empowering young attorneys and mentoring future female leaders are fundamental aspects of her career.
Fisk’s journey from humble beginnings to leading one of the most iconic brands in the luxury home furnishings industry is a testament to her determination, resilience, and passion for making a difference. Her story is not just one of professional success but of a personal commitment to helping others find their path to success.
As the youngest of five children, Fisk was no stranger to hardship. Her mother, who was left to support four kids after her husband’s unexpected passing, worked tirelessly to keep the family afloat. Fisk learned early on the importance of independence and self-reliance.
“I never wanted to be in a position where I had to rely on somebody else,” Fisk reflects. “I always knew I’d figure out how to work really hard professionally and be a hands-on mom.” This determination, fueled by hearing stories of her mother’s struggles, shaped her strong work ethic and unwavering drive to succeed on her terms.
Fisk’s academic journey was equally driven by ambition and resilience. As the first professional in her family to earn a graduate degree—and the first woman to graduate from both high school and college—Fisk understood the importance of education from an early age. Despite facing challenges, including losing her eldest sister to heroin addiction—which plagued the family since Fisk’s early childhood, and her father’s battle with illness that led to his passing in Fisk’s early 20s—she remained steadfast in her goals, driven by a fierce determination to pave her path. Education became a cornerstone of her journey, and her commitment to self-improvement inspired those around her to strive for their best.
Humorously inspired by legal dramas like Ally McBeal, Fisk initially envisioned herself as an impassioned courtroom advocate. However, her perspective shifted after spending several years in private practice, specializing in real estate, commercial law and civil litigation.
“As a litigator for five years, I realized it wasn’t as rewarding as I envisioned,” she admits. “I felt like I was wasting time, money, and energy on negativity. I was drawn more to the business side of my clients’ needs.” Her natural inclination toward problem-solving and practical solutions led her away from litigation and into a transactional practice where her skills could truly shine.
Building teams and solving problems
Fisk’s journey from private practice to in-house counsel roles with major corporations like Gap, Uber, WeWork, and the Flynn Group exemplifies her adaptability and leadership skills. At Gap, she managed pre-litigation property management, analyzed leases, assessed risk, and collaborated with outside counsel on litigation matters. Her ability to solve problems and navigate business challenges led her to take on increasingly complex roles, including managing a regional team and overseeing leasing transactions across various brands. During her 12 years at Gap, she honed her real estate and strategic decision-making expertise, building strong professional relationships and earning a reputation as a problem-solver.
Fisk later transitioned to the Flynn Group (the largest restaurant franchisee in the world), where she joined the company as its first transactional attorney.
“Within two weeks of joining Flynn, the company doubled in size after a major acquisition,” she recalls. “I came on board as the first in-house attorney to handle real estate transactions, and my role quickly became about institutionalizing scalable practices.”
The challenge of structuring legal frameworks for over 2,500 locations offered Fisk an unparalleled opportunity to deepen her understanding of corporate strategy and team leadership.
Fisk’s commitment to building strong, resilient teams continued at RH, where she now leads a small, flexible, and dynamic real estate team. The company’s expansion into Europe and immersive retail concepts that blend hospitality with luxury furnishings present unique legal challenges.
“I love the real estate side of the law because I can touch, feel, and see the results of my work,” she explains. “There’s something gratifying about supporting creative ideas and making them come to life.” Her enthusiasm for the intersection of creativity and law is matched only by her commitment to guiding her team through complex problem-solving.
Mentoring the next generation
One of Fisk’s most significant passions is empowering young female attorneys. Having navigated a male-dominated field herself over the last twenty-four years, she recognizes the importance of advocating for women and guiding them through the unique challenges they may face.
“Female leadership is huge to me. We are all lawyers, but women still need extra support in navigating corporate environments,” she emphasizes. “I prioritize representing the younger generation and their voices, passions, and perspectives at the table.”
Fisk is known for her straightforward, respectful approach to leadership, fostering an environment where honesty and fairness are paramount.
“People remember how you treated them,” she notes. “If you’re known for being honorable and tough but fair, people will work hard to get you what you need.” Her approach to mentorship is rooted in practical experience and empathy, allowing her to build lasting relationships and inspire loyalty and commitment.
As a mentor, she is committed to guiding younger attorneys in legal expertise and emotional intelligence.
“Training is essential,” Fisk states. “Some attorneys are naturally skilled negotiators, but others can develop this critical skill for lawyers if given the right opportunities, mentoring, and support. I encourage young lawyers to understand the importance of building relationships, not just fighting to win.”
This nuanced approach to negotiation and problem-solving reflects her belief that effective leadership is more than just legal acumen—it fosters interpersonal connections and collaborative problem-solving.
Despite her demanding career, Fisk remains dedicated to her family and personal growth. A former multi-sport athlete, she credits much of her leadership philosophy to lessons learned on the basketball, volleyball, and softball courts.
“The best lessons I learned were from being part of a team—how to work with people of different skill levels, how to lead without overshadowing others, and how to keep the energy positive even during challenges.” These formative experiences on the court shaped her approach to leadership, teaching her to balance competitiveness with collaboration.
Her passion for mentorship extends beyond the office, as she spent over ten years coaching her children’s sports teams.
“It’s important to treat people as individuals within the team structure and understand their strengths and opportunities for improvement,” she says. “The same approach works whether I’m managing attorneys or coaching kids—building trust, giving people the tools to succeed, and being there when they need guidance.”
Fisk’s dedication to leadership, mentorship, and fostering strong, resilient teams is evident in every role she takes. As she grows at RH, her legacy will undoubtedly include the successful projects she spearheaded and the next generation of leaders she nurtured. Whether in the office or the court or field, Fisk remains a beacon of inspiration, championing hard work, integrity and unwavering support for others.
