Rob Tyler’s role as general counsel for North America at ARLANXEO places him at the intersection of complex regulation, high-stakes operational risk, and fast-moving commercial decision-making. Spanning jurisdictions in Pennsylvania, Ontario, and Texas, his remit requires both technical fluency and the ability to translate legal uncertainty into clear, business-ready guidance. Over time, the role has sharpened his instincts around what truly matters in moments of pressure, and how Legal can operate as an enabling function rather than a bottleneck.
Rob Tyler | ARLANXEO | General Counsel, North America
ARLANXEO is a global manufacturer of synthetic rubber, supplying advanced materials to industries including automotive, construction, and energy. With operations spanning multiple continents, the company focuses on innovation, safety, and reliability across its integrated value chain.
Operating across borders has forced Tyler to develop a disciplined approach to legal prioritization. Each issue begins with a threshold assessment: determining whether it is a local concern, a regional risk, or an enterprise-wide issue. That distinction allows him to allocate resources efficiently and avoid over-engineering responses where a practical solution will suffice.
“I have learned to quickly distinguish between issues that are local and those with broader implications, enabling efficient risk assessment and strategic adaptation as legal and business environments evolve,” Tyler explains.
This mindset is especially critical given the diversity of legal regimes that touch ARLANXEO’s North American footprint. Labor rules, environmental obligations, commercial standards, and regulatory expectations can vary materially across jurisdictions. Tyler’s role is not to master every nuance personally, but to know where to dig deeper, when to escalate, and how to frame those differences so business leaders can act on them without hesitation.
Crisis response & cross-functional trust
One of the most formative experiences in Tyler’s tenure was managing one of the company’s largest litigation matters stemming from an equipment failure. The scale and urgency of the issue quickly made clear that legal strategy alone would not carry the day. Success depended on coordination across operations, safety, procurement, supply chain, communications, finance, commercial, and executive leadership.
“Managing a significant litigation matter highlighted the importance of speed, transparency, and alignment across departments,” Tyler says.
Tyler helped establish a rhythm of regular, focused communication that allowed each function to understand both the legal posture and the operational realities on the ground. By aligning messaging, timelines, and decision-making authority early, the company was able to respond cohesively rather than defensively. For Tyler, the experience reinforced that trust is built not during calm periods, but in the clarity and consistency shown under pressure.
Learning fast in unfamiliar terrain
The breadth of issues Tyler encounters often requires him to get up to speed quickly on technical subject matter far outside traditional legal training. Whether dealing with new energy solutions, off-site battery storage arbitration, or the mechanics of Texas natural gas systems, his approach is methodical and pragmatic.
“When approaching unfamiliar technical or business topics, I prioritize rapid learning by consulting with subject matter experts and distilling complex information into actionable legal guidance,” he notes.
In practice, this means assembling cross-functional teams that include engineers, technical specialists, and external counsel, then translating their insights into concise reference materials that can be pressure-tested in real scenarios. During the battery storage litigation, this process proved essential.
“The key was engaging internal and external technical counsel and engineers. We built a cross-functional team that could translate the technical risks into legal exposures and vice versa,” Tyler says.
A similar dynamic emerged during the Big Freeze natural-gas pricing dispute in Texas, when routine supply contracts suddenly carried outsized financial exposure.
“The most surprising part was how quickly a routine supply contract could become a significant exposure,” he details.
Tyler’s role was to move quickly on parallel tracks, clarifying contractual obligations while supporting operational teams as they secured alternatives and modeled potential outcomes. The lesson was clear: legal agility must be matched by operational speed.
Operating lean while thinking long-term
Overseeing all legal matters for such a broad region with a lean in-house team has pushed Tyler to be intentional about structure and partnerships. He relies heavily on external counsel, not as transactional vendors, but as extensions of the internal team.
Clear playbooks for routine matters, shared resources, and regular check-ins allow Legal to remain responsive without burning capacity.
Balancing day-to-day contract review and litigation management with higher-level responsibilities such as M&A evaluation and tariff strategy requires disciplined time management. Tyler blocks dedicated time for strategic work and standardizes recurring tasks wherever possible. That structure has become increasingly important as tariffs and regulatory shifts place immediate pressure on commercial and supply chain teams.
“Legal developments—including tariffs and regulatory changes—can have immediate and significant effects on commercial operations,” he says.
His focus is on translating complexity into options, outlining risks in plain terms, and enabling business leaders to make informed decisions in volatile conditions. Looking ahead, Tyler is focused on shifting Legal from a reactive posture to a predictive one, incorporating data analytics, scenario planning, and artificial intelligence to identify emerging risks earlier.
Just as important, he continues to invest in relationships across the organization so that Legal is seen not as a last-minute reviewer, but as a proactive partner in navigating uncertainty.
