Scholastica Baker’s journey to an in-house legal role for one of the world’s most recognizable brands is as unique as the way her father introduces her to new people.

“This is my daughter, Scholastica. She is a lawyer and was an officer in the U.S. Army.”

While Baker says she would prefer he stop the introduction at her first name, she acknowledges that her father—and mother—are so proud of what she has become that she has learned to be okay with his introductory words.

Baker, a first-generation American and daughter of two Ugandan immigrants, is a former Army intelligence officer and the current senior counsel, director of commercial litigation for McDonald’s.

From her early days as a paralegal in the Minnesota Army National Guard to her current role at a company known worldwide, Baker’s life is a testament to the values of integrity, adaptability and perseverance. Fast food, faster decisions

McDonald’s, a global leader in the fast-food industry, serves millions of customers daily across more than 100 countries. Known for its iconic Golden Arches, McDonald’s is synonymous with innovation, efficiency and quality. From pioneering drive-thru service to introducing digital kiosks and mobile ordering, the company has consistently redefined the dining experience. With a complex structure that includes corporate-owned locations and a vast network of franchisees, McDonald’s legal department plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance, protecting its reputation and supporting its mission of providing affordable, high-quality food.

For Baker, working at McDonald’s is not just a job; it is the realization of a long-held ambition to combine her legal expertise with an organization known for its values and global impact.

“I always wanted to work as a defense lawyer for a company with good values, a company that strives to do the right thing,” she says. “McDonald’s has to maintain its reputation and name brand worldwide, and that requires a strong legal team to navigate complex challenges.”

In her role at McDonald’s, Baker navigates various legal challenges. “It’s part of the cost of doing business at a company the size of McDonald’s,” she notes. “It’s a blessing and a curse. We’re always innovating and figuring out how to serve more people than ever.”

Despite the demands of her role, Baker finds immense satisfaction in her work. She credits much of her success to the people she works with and the culture of excellence at McDonald’s.

“It’s incredibly challenging and rewarding work—often back-to-back meetings, managing discovery, overseeing outside counsel, keeping stakeholders apprised, and collaborating with internal business partners to align on a strategy that also meets business objectives. But no day is the same, and that keeps things interesting. I genuinely like the people I work with, and that’s what makes it all worth it,” Baker notes.

McMaking a legal career

Born in Hammond, Louisiana, and raised in a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota, Baker’s path to this role began in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, when Baker joined the Army National Guard. While the terrorist attacks that reshaped the world were not her primary motivation, they reinforced her desire to serve. She started as a paralegal, receiving active-duty training at the U.S. Army Paralegal School and deploying to Bosnia on a peacekeeping mission. In Bosnia, she worked at the division level, assisting the staff judge advocate in managing legal processes under demanding conditions. This experience taught her to think critically, act decisively, and prioritize effectively—skills that became foundational in her legal career.

Baker’s military journey didn’t stop there. As an officer transitioning into military intelligence, she obtained a top-secret clearance and was deployed to Basrah, Iraq. Her role required analyzing enemy activities and briefing commanders on what the enemy was doing now and what they might do in the next 24 hours. This work demanded precision, quick thinking, and the ability to synthesize vast amounts of information under pressure.

“You learn to execute the mission, no matter how difficult,” she reflects. “The Army teaches you resilience, leadership, selfless service, and how to think strategically. These skills shaped me into who I am today.”

After completing her military service, Baker pursued a legal career, initially working in two law firms. While she once envisioned making a partner, she began questioning whether the partnership model aligned with her goals and lifestyle.

“Though I appreciate my law firm experiences, I started thinking about my lifestyle and realized that partnership wasn’t going to work for me,” she explains. She was drawn instead to the collaborative culture of McDonald’s and the opportunity to work for a company she describes as a “dream.”

Behind the counter of corporate law

Beyond her legal responsibilities, Baker serves as the assistant board secretary for the Program Management Committee of Ronald McDonald House Charities, reflecting her commitment to McDonald’s broader mission of giving back to the community.

Baker’s personal life is equally dynamic. Married to her best friend from the Army, she is the mother of three boys—ages 8, 10, and 14—and balances the demands of family life with her ambitious career. Her parents, both highly educated professionals, instilled in her a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence. Named Scholastica in honor of their academic achievements, her upbringing emphasized integrity, effort, and education.

“The assumption was that you were going to be wickedly smart because of your effort,” she recalls.

Now 45 and pursuing an MBA, Baker has her sights set on the C-suite. She aspires to leverage her leadership skills and expertise on an even larger scale, aiming to become a member of a multi-billion-dollar corporation’s C-suite.

“There’s so much more I want to achieve,” she says. “I’m not satisfied staying where I am forever. I have more to offer, and I want to make an even bigger impact.”

For Baker, the transition from military intelligence to corporate litigation may seem unconventional, but the common thread is clear: an unwavering commitment to service, problem-solving, and leadership. Whether she’s briefing commanders on enemy strategy or guiding McDonald’s through complex legal challenges, Baker embodies the resilience, adaptability, and integrity that define true leaders. Her journey is a powerful reminder that the skills forged in one arena can transform another—and that leadership, at its core, is about rising to meet every challenge with purpose and determination.
