Flow as a professional philosophy

Uberoi describes his work as a continuous search for “flow,” a state where effort feels aligned rather than forced. His role naturally creates that environment. As associate general counsel for platform, channels, IP, and open source, he moves between engineering discussions, partnership negotiations, regulatory analysis, and intellectual property strategy, often within the same day.

“Flow is when you stop forcing and start responding,” Uberoi says. “My role creates the conditions for that because no two days look the same.”

This variety is not accidental. Unlike traditional legal roles that focus deeply on a single specialty, Uberoi operates as a horizontal generalist. His background as a former general counsel sharpened his ability to spot issues across domains and anticipate downstream risks. Instead of owning one narrow vertical, he focuses on how decisions in one area ripple across product architecture, regulatory posture, and partnership structures.

“I might call in a specialist to fill in a gap,” he says. “But my advantage is seeing the big picture.”

That pattern recognition has become a core value-add for BILL as the company continues to expand its ecosystem. Whether advising on open-source compliance, structuring indirect servicing relationships, or protecting proprietary technology, Uberoi’s role is less about gatekeeping and more about enabling forward momentum without creating long-term liabilities.

Building the foundation

One of the most visible outcomes of that approach has been BILL’s embedded finance integration with Oracle NetSuite. What began as a nascent concept roughly two-and-a-half years ago has evolved into a robust capability that enables customers to pay vendors and manage bills directly within their ERP environment.

“NetSuite mattered because it proved something we believed but hadn’t demonstrated at scale,” Uberoi says. “That our regulated services could be pipelined to where customers already work.”

From a legal perspective, the effort required building an entirely new framework around data governance, risk allocation, compliance programs, and regulatory positioning. But for Uberoi, the project represented more than documentation and deal structure. It was an exercise in cross-functional creativity, bringing together product teams, engineers, and business leaders to design something that did not previously exist.

The result shifted BILL’s positioning from a standalone destination to an embedded infrastructure layer. Instead of asking customers to adopt a separate workflow, the platform now integrates invisibly into tools they already use. That strategic shift expanded BILL’s reach and strengthened its role within broader financial ecosystems.

Platform integration & regulatory alignment

Uberoi’s impact has also been felt in BILL’s internal platform unification efforts. When he joined the company, BILL had acquired multiple businesses that had not yet been fully integrated into a cohesive product ecosystem. Turning those separate entities into a seamless platform required far more than technical integration.

“Integration work is humbling,” Uberoi says. “You inherit complexity you didn’t create, and you have to make sense of it before you can move forward.”

His approach began with listening. By auditing contracts, regulatory regimes, IP ownership, and customer agreements, he helped the organization prioritize the most urgent blockers while sequencing longer-term structural improvements. In highly regulated financial services environments, this work is inherently complex, especially when combining software platforms with banking and lending frameworks.

“Perfect alignment doesn’t exist,” he says. “My job isn’t to resolve all the tension. It’s to find the path through it that lets the business move without creating future landmines.”

That balance between speed and compliance defines much of Uberoi’s daily work. It requires judgment over checklists, practical trade-offs over theoretical perfection, and close alignment with business leaders shaping product direction.

Music, people & creative energy

Outside the office, Uberoi’s creative identity remains central to his view of leadership. A longtime musician who continues to release independent music, he draws parallels between improvisation on stage and decision-making in complex legal environments.

“I’ve been making music for 30 years,” he says. “You learn your instruments so you can improvise freely. Similarly, you build strong legal frameworks so you can respond fluidly when something unexpected arrives.”

That creative mindset extends into his personal life. Raised in Fremont, California, he helped launch a teen center in his hometown more than two decades ago and remains connected to youth mentorship efforts. He describes himself as a devoted father, energized by conversation, collaboration, and community rather than solitary routines.

Professionally, Uberoi is also reflecting on what success means in mid-career. Having achieved many milestones by his late 30s, including leadership roles, creative output, and personal stability, he now focuses less on external markers and more on contribution and presence.

“I have little left to prove to anyone, so I can just enjoy contributing,” he says. “Sharing what I’ve learned, mentoring others, and staying open to whatever wants to emerge.”

That philosophy aligns closely with his family history. With roots in legal advocacy in pre-partition India and decades of exposure to Silicon Valley’s technology cycles, Uberoi carries both a service-oriented mindset and a long-term view of innovation trends. He brings idealism tempered by experience, believing that law can support human flourishing when applied with intention and care.
