Sofia Almeida – Zurich

Law with a lasting impact

For Sofia Almeida, General Counsel for Zurich Ecuador, law is not just about regulation—it is about people. Every decision she makes begins with the question: How does this affect our people?

Zurich Insurance Group, a global leader serving individuals and businesses in more than 200 countries, grounds its operations in four sustainability pillars: people, customers, the planet, and communities. For Almeida, these pillars are not abstract principles but the foundation of her legal strategy. They define what responsible leadership looks like in Ecuador’s insurance sector and shape the way her team approaches every challenge.

In the people pillar, the Legal Department acts as a strategic partner to Human Resources, helping to create a workplace culture rooted in fairness, inclusion, and respect. Almeida’s approach goes far beyond labor compliance. Her team develops ethical employment frameworks, internal mediation systems, and anti-harassment protocols that ensure every employee feels protected and valued.

“Legal’s role is to promote ethics and trust,” Almeida says. “We help guarantee that our employees work in an environment that is transparent, diverse, and safe.”

Her work extends to reinforcing Zurich’s Code of Ethics, guiding training initiatives, and establishing whistleblower mechanisms that protect employees and the company’s reputation alike. The Legal Department also plays a crucial role in aligning internal policies with evolving social regulations, ensuring that equity and inclusion are not just values but measurable commitments.

This focus on people also shapes Almeida’s leadership philosophy. She believes that a true leader becomes less necessary each day by building capable, autonomous teams. “No one is indispensable,” she says, “but everyone is unrepeatable.” By mentoring her staff and promoting shared decision-making, she strengthens Zurich Ecuador’s foundation for sustainable growth.

Protecting trust and promoting sustainability

The second pillar—customers—is equally central to Zurich’s identity. “Our customers’ expectations are changing,” she says. “They want to know that the companies they trust are not only financially sound but also socially and environmentally responsible.”

To meet those expectations, Zurich Ecuador’s Legal Department integrates sustainability principles directly into its client relationships. Contracts now include specific environmental, ethical, and governance clauses, holding brokers, suppliers, and partners accountable to the same standards Zurich upholds internally. These agreements protect the company from reputational risks while reinforcing its long-standing promise of integrity.

A customer-focused sustainability strategy also means transforming legal work from reactive to proactive. Almeida and her team design frameworks that promote transparency and reduce disputes before they arise. They analyze how regulatory shifts, consumer preferences, and ESG trends can create new market opportunities, ensuring Zurich stays ahead of industry changes.

“Compliance and innovation must go hand in hand,” Almeida explains. “If we understand our customers’ values, we can build products and relationships that last.”

Her participation in the Federation of Insurance Companies of Ecuador (FEDESEG) further amplifies this mission. Through FEDESEG, Almeida advocates for policies that strengthen consumer protection, promote financial literacy, and expand access to insurance. She also helped represent Zurich at the 2025 International Conference on Inclusive Insurance, a milestone event that brought more than 400 delegates from around the world to Ecuador to discuss financial inclusion and sustainability.

“Our goal is to make insurance a tool for empowerment,” she says. “When people understand and trust it, we build a stronger and more resilient society.”

Aligning law with environmental responsibility

The third sustainability pillar—planet—has transformed how Almeida practices law. She sees environmental awareness not as an optional consideration but as a legal and moral responsibility.

Under her leadership, Zurich Ecuador’s Legal Department has adopted a proactive approach to environmental governance. Her team ensures that the company’s decisions, contracts, and policies account for climate risks, resource use, and long-term ecological impact. This includes drafting sustainability clauses, reviewing environmental disclosures, and advising the board on how business operations intersect with national and global climate goals.

“Law should be a bridge between corporate activity and planetary responsibility,” Almeida says. “We can no longer separate environmental impact from legal risk.”

The department now works across disciplines—legal, commercial, and financial—to build frameworks that anticipate environmental regulations before they become mandatory. This allows Zurich Ecuador to adapt early and maintain resilience amid shifting global standards.

Almeida also encourages collaboration with Compliance and Communications to ensure that sustainability campaigns and reports are accurate, transparent, and aligned with current law. This approach prevents “greenwashing” and helps strengthen Zurich’s credibility as an environmentally conscious insurer.

Her work demonstrates how legal strategy can elevate sustainability from compliance to culture. By embedding environmental stewardship into contracts, governance, and decision-making, she turns Zurich Ecuador’s legal function into a driver of planetary accountability.

Expanding impact beyond the company

The final pillar—communities—reflects Almeida’s belief that business success is inseparable from social responsibility. For her, Zurich’s purpose of “building a brighter future together” is realized through empathy, inclusion, and service.

This commitment is deeply personal. From a young age, Almeida was exposed to the challenges faced by people with disabilities. That experience inspired her to devote much of her life to philanthropic work focused on accessibility and equality.

“Disability is not a limitation,” she says. “It becomes a challenge only when society creates barriers. Inclusion benefits everyone.”

Her advocacy has shaped Zurich Ecuador’s community engagement efforts, encouraging projects that promote education, visibility, and well-being for vulnerable populations. By partnering with non-profit organizations and public institutions, the company works to address social inequalities and build more inclusive communities.

As president of the Swiss Ecuadorian Chamber of Commerce, Almeida has also helped strengthen bridges between the private sector and civil society. The position, she says, taught her valuable lessons about negotiation, consensus building, and collective leadership—skills she now applies at Zurich to align business growth with social progress.

“Representing diverse voices showed me that leadership is about listening first,” she explains. “When we consider every stakeholder, we make decisions that endure.”

Her work within FEDESEG complements this vision. By promoting industry self-regulation, transparency, and collaboration, Zurich and its peers are helping to restore public trust in the insurance sector. Coordinating shared disaster funds and educational outreach reduces systemic risk and enhances national resilience—critical for a country like Ecuador, where natural disasters frequently test the limits of preparedness.

Purpose, growth & the path ahead

Across all four pillars, Almeida’s leadership is guided by a clear sense of purpose. Whether protecting employee rights, empowering customers, mitigating environmental risk, or uplifting communities, her actions reflect a belief that law can—and must—be a force for good.

Sofia Almeida – Zurich

She is now pursuing an MBA with a concentration in corporate finance to strengthen her strategic capabilities and broaden her impact within Zurich. The goal is not only personal growth but institutional progress: to bridge legal expertise with business strategy and help the company lead through both principle and performance.

“Zurich gives us the tools to grow and the freedom to lead,” she says. “The more we evolve as individuals, the stronger we become as a collective.”

Through mentorship programs like the 30%+ Club Ecuador, Almeida continues to prepare herself for higher levels of leadership while mentoring future generations of women in law and business. She views these experiences as part of a larger responsibility—to inspire others to lead with empathy, integrity, and purpose.

Looking ahead, she hopes to continue advancing Zurich’s mission of protecting Ecuadorians’ efforts through sustainable, transparent, and ethical insurance practices. “Insurance is about trust,” she says. “It is about being there when people need you most.”

With Almeida at the helm of Zurich Ecuador’s legal and sustainability vision, that trust extends well beyond contracts—it becomes a promise to people, customers, the planet, and communities alike.

Testimonials

I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
