Steve Burdumy – Footprint

Where legal leadership meets material science innovation

A career built at the intersection of business, law, and strategy has defined Steve Burdumy’s professional trajectory long before he ever held a C-suite title. Today, as chief business officer and general counsel for Footprint, Burdumy operates at the center of a fast-scaling, mission-driven company working to redefine the future of sustainable packaging. His role reflects a blend of legal rigor, commercial judgment, and operational leadership shaped by decades of experience on both sides of the table.

Steve Burdumy | Footprint | Chief Business Officer & General Counsel

Burdumy was born and raised in Philadelphia and originally envisioned a future connected to politics. A law degree, in his mind, was a practical steppingstone toward that world. As an undergraduate studying international economics, however, he found himself increasingly drawn to the mechanics of how businesses operate, transact, and grow. That academic foundation, combined with his natural interest in strategy, ultimately pulled him toward corporate law rather than public service.

In private practice, Burdumy built a diverse client base that spanned small and mid-sized public companies, entrepreneurs, venture capital and private equity funds, investment advisors, and hedge funds. The work was complex and varied, requiring him to navigate transactions, governance, financing, and risk across multiple industries. Over time, clients began to comment not only on his legal advice but also on his business instincts.

“I always enjoyed transactions, counseling, and being a strategic advisor,” Burdumy says.

Those client interactions planted an important seed. He was not just practicing law. He was advising executives, weighing commercial tradeoffs, and helping shape outcomes that extended well beyond legal documentation. That dual perspective became even more pronounced as he took on leadership roles at his law firm, including chairing the corporate department for a decade and serving in firm management.

Managing partners and personalities, he found, was challenging but energizing. The experience sharpened his leadership skills and gave him an inside view of how organizations make decisions under pressure, an education that would later prove critical outside of private practice.

Stepping into executive leadership

The pivot from law firm partner to operating executive came through a longtime client in the clinical research space. After the expiration of a noncompete, Burdumy was invited to help launch Transformative Pharmaceutical Solutions, stepping into dual roles as chief operating officer and chief legal officer. To ease the transition and maintain continuity for clients, he remained of counsel at his firm while building the new company.

The move confirmed what he had already sensed. His legal training and business mindset were mutually reinforcing. He was comfortable overseeing operations, capital structure, and strategy while remaining the company’s top legal authority.

“My highest and best use is risk mitigation and problem-solving,” he says.

That philosophy has remained consistent throughout his career. Litigation, in his view, is always a last resort. The real value of legal leadership lies in anticipating issues, applying sound judgment, and enabling the business to move forward with confidence. It is an approach grounded in preparation, calm under pressure, and an ability to read people and situations, particularly in negotiations.

“Part of the job of any general counsel is keeping calm under pressure,” Burdumy says.

Building the legal & business engine at Footprint

In April 2020, at the height of uncertainty as the world shut down during the early days of COVID, Burdumy joined Footprint as its first general counsel. Recruited by a board member and former client who was drawn to the company’s sustainability mission, he relocated to Arizona and began learning the business almost entirely remotely.

The pace was immediate and intense.

“I started drinking from a firehose within two weeks,” he says.

Footprint is a materials science company focused on providing solutions that replace traditional plastic packaging with plant-based, fiber-driven alternatives. Its mission, Healthy Planet, Healthy People, reflects a dual commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing the health risks associated with microplastics in food packaging. Backed by a deep patent portfolio of approximately 95 patents and pending applications, the company has positioned itself as the technology leader as regulatory pressure and consumer demand for sustainable solutions accelerate, particularly in Europe and among younger demographics.

Burdumy was tasked with building the legal function from scratch. Early priorities centered on commercial contracts with customers and suppliers, establishing scalable systems, and aligning legal processes with revenue generation rather than bottlenecks. Over time, he built a team that grew from one attorney to five and now operates with three lawyers and a legal assistant, supported by outside counsel in specialty areas such as intellectual property, international trade, and local labor and litigation matters.

“We try to do a lot of work in-house, all about ensuring we’re managing to a budget,” he says.

That discipline extends to capital markets and strategic transactions. Burdumy has overseen complex equity and debt structures, managed intellectual property strategy, and led a SPAC process that was ultimately terminated in December 2022 due to market conditions. Throughout, he has emphasized speed-to-revenue, pragmatic risk assessment, and treating legal as an enabler rather than a barrier.

Scaling globally & looking ahead

As chief business officer and general counsel, Burdumy’s scope now spans legal, capital strategy, and partnership across Footprint’s growing global presence. He oversees legal support for large-scale manufacturing operations in Mexicali, Mexico, where the company operates a 1.6 million-square-foot facility with approximately 1,600 employees, and for a new European manufacturing site in Poland, scheduled to launch in late 2026.

Poland was selected for its cost structure, skilled workforce, logistics advantages, and ease of doing business across Europe. Additional expansion opportunities in the Middle East and Asia are already under discussion as global demand for sustainable packaging continues to rise.

To support scale, Burdumy continues to concentrate on contract automation and AI-driven legal tools. Question-and-answer-based systems allow business teams to generate first drafts of agreements, while AI applications are used to prepare and summarize complex documents in minutes rather than days. He views these tools as transformative for in-house legal teams and potentially disruptive for traditional law firm billing models, though he remains cautious about verification and quality control.

“Always double-check the work,” he says.

For Burdumy, leadership is as much about people as process. He prioritizes accessibility, emotional intelligence, and hiring for long-term fit. Turnover, he notes, is expensive, and building a cohesive team requires patience, instinct, and alignment with the company’s mission to change the planet. His calendar is typically packed with business meetings rather than purely legal ones, reflecting how embedded the legal function has become in Footprint’s operations.

Looking ahead, he sees 2026 as a major inflection point, with additional strategic and capital initiatives, expanded manufacturing capacity, and the potential need to further scale the legal and business infrastructure. The challenges are significant, but so is the opportunity.

“My job is not boring. It is anything but,” Burdumy says.

One-sentence social media post: Steve Burdumy brings a rare blend of legal insight and business leadership to Footprint, helping scale a mission-driven materials science company focused on building a healthier planet through sustainable packaging solutions.

Testimonials

As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
