Steve McPheeters – HighFive Healthcare

Expanding healthcare excellence

HighFive Healthcare operates across the Southeast, spanning 11 states, and partners with best-in-class endodontists and oral surgeons to provide superior patient care. The company offers comprehensive administrative and management services, including accounting, finance, HR, benefits, recruiting, operations, scheduling, marketing, credentialing, and insurance verification. As a one-stop shop for back-office services, HighFive Healthcare prides itself on fostering strong, collaborative relationships with its doctors and dentists, ensuring they feel like integral partners in a cohesive team. By affiliating with practices that excel in their respective markets, HighFive Healthcare maintains the strongest local brands and continues to support these practices under their original names after the partnership.

As the executive vice president and chief legal officer, Steve McPheeters plays a crucial role in ensuring HighFive Healthcare’s operations run smoothly and efficiently. His responsibilities include overseeing all legal aspects of the company’s operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, guiding corporate governance practices, and managing mergers and acquisitions. His strategic insight and extensive legal expertise drive the company’s growth and success.

“Our comprehensive support services allow doctors to focus on what matters most: their patients. It’s about empowering our partners and maintaining their local identities, ensuring we grow together while upholding the highest standards.” McPheeters says.

Enhancing patient care

One of the significant projects McPheeters has spearheaded is refining HighFive Healthcare’s affiliation and partnership model. This approach allows doctors to become co-owners of the HighFive entity while HighFive manages the practices. This true partnership structure ensures legal and compliance integrity, enabling doctors to focus on patient care while HighFive handles the administrative burden. This model has proven highly effective in fostering a sense of ownership and collaboration among affiliated practices, enhancing their ability to deliver exceptional patient care.

In addition to the affiliation model, McPheeters has been integral in executing mergers and acquisitions, ensuring that each transaction is seamless and beneficial for all parties involved. His expertise in negotiating and structuring deals has allowed HighFive Healthcare to expand its network and strengthen its presence across the Southeast. These acquisitions have increased the company’s footprint and enhanced the quality of care provided by integrating best practices from various entities.

McPheeters also emphasizes the importance of customized support for each partner. Understanding that each practice has unique needs, he ensures that HighFive provides tailored assistance in areas like payroll, recruiting, or HR. This approach has been crucial in helping smaller practices thrive by allowing them to focus on their core mission of patient care without getting bogged down by administrative tasks.

“Empowering doctors with true partnership enhance patient care while ensuring compliance and operational efficiency,” McPheeters says.

Creating an inclusive workplace

McPheeters’ leadership philosophy revolves around creating a collaborative environment encouraging team members to share their expertise and ideas. He believes fostering open communication and strong relationships across departments is essential for achieving HighFive Healthcare’s strategic objectives. By empowering his team to contribute actively and innovate, McPheeters ensures that the company stays agile and responsive to industry changes and challenges.

His proactive approach to leadership is underscored by a commitment to continuous learning and personal development. McPheeters actively seeks opportunities to expand his knowledge and skills, staying ahead of legal trends and best practices in healthcare administration. This proactive stance enhances his own capabilities and sets a precedent for growth and improvement within his team.

McPheeters values inclusivity and support in the workplace. He strives to cultivate an environment where every team member feels valued and respected, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment. By nurturing this inclusive culture, McPheeters ensures that his team remains motivated and engaged, ultimately contributing to HighFive Healthcare’s overall success and employee satisfaction.

Looking forward, McPheeters is driven by a passion for his role and the healthcare industry. His dedication to advancing HighFive Healthcare’s mission of expanding its reach and enhancing patient care reflects his deep-seated commitment to making a meaningful impact in healthcare. With his adept navigation of complex legal landscapes and steadfast leadership, McPheeters continues to be an invaluable force driving excellence and innovation at HighFive Healthcare.

From law graduate to executive leader

McPheeters’ journey in the legal and corporate world showcases his dedication and expertise. He began his educational path with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Auburn University, followed by a juris doctor from The University of Alabama School of Law. This foundation set the stage for his career.

After graduation, McPheeters started his legal career in Birmingham, Alabama, joining Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C. Over 21 years, he made significant contributions, particularly in the Corporate, Securities, and Tax Practice Group. His leadership was recognized as he became a shareholder and co-chaired the Mergers & Acquisitions Group and the Healthcare/Physician Practice Integration Transactions Group, solidifying his expertise in corporate transactions and healthcare law.

In July 2021, McPheeters embraced a new role as executive vice president and chief legal officer at HighFive Healthcare. This marked his first in-house position, where he quickly became integral to the executive team. His responsibilities include overseeing legal operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and guiding corporate governance. His strategic insight and extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions have been pivotal in driving the company’s growth and success.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, McPheeters values family and community. He and his wife are empty nesters, enjoying travel, skiing, and beach time. Testimonials

As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
