What Happens, Legally, When the Olympics are Postponed or Cancelled

It’s more than medals at stake

Friday, April 17, 2020 The Olympics have only been cancelled three times since 1896, and only due to war, according to Time. In the midst of COVID-19 lockdowns, they’re at least being rescheduled, with the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo now planned for the summer of 2021. But as the general counsels from three of […]

Fast-Tracked Medication Could Treat COVID-19 by Midsummer

Because coronavirus patients can’t wait another day

Thursday, April 16, 2020 It’s a long and expensive process between a medication being developed and brought to market, but with a global pandemic claiming victims by the thousands daily just in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration might provide some flexibility to companies that could offer something promising against COVID-19.  That could happen as early as summer with the anti-viral drug Vicromax. It’s being supported for imminent clinical testing by […]

Sick with COVID-19 and Managing Social Services in New York City

There's little downtime for essential service providers

Monday, April 13, 2020 The back pain wasn’t entirely unusual for Adam Lancer, he says. But then his wife, Dina, ran a fever of over 102 degrees and he soon followed with a fever of 101. Some of their seven children followed suit.  Lancer didn’t need a medical degree to believe the couple had COVID-19. He was never tested, and there was little need after her test came back positive. But […]

Supplying Police, Cannabis Branding Business Provides Hand Sanitizer

The alcohol-based product was distributed in Johnson, Arkansas

April 9, 2020 The message of personal hygiene, with an emphasis on hand washing, is a message many Americans have heard loud and clear as a means to thwart infection and the slow the spread of coronavirus during the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.  Common stringent hand sanitizers are good at killing the germs, too—if you can find them. But people in panic-mode have stripped store shelves clean, and online sales have driven the cost of hand sanitizer to more than $130 a bottle in some cases.  That’s led to […]

Insurance Coverage is Uncertain in Evolving COVID-19 Crisis

Questions, never mind answers, are just emerging

Wednesday, April 8, 2020 Working in the oil and gas industry in the South and Southeast, Dan Schwarzenbach is accustomed to intricate legal and insurance questions. Many revolve around Mother Nature—for instance, how Sunland Construction is covered in the event it leaves a job site because of impending bad weather like a hurricane. However, they […]

Corporate attorneys have 320 million new clients

They are the Americans who rely on corporations as much as their country

Of all the people and businesses written about in our recent edition, none are without international ties. An office in another country is the obvious example; past ownership under a consortium of Korean private equity firms one of the more obscure (see the story on Acushnet Holdings). Such international ties are undeniably important. They are […]

Editor’s note: technology on our minds

Long known for conservatism, attorneys are pushing a new approach

There are many differences between technology and law; high among them is that the former may change almost daily, while the latter is at the convenience of the lawmakers. It’s a hare versus tortoise race, only it’s the hare—the technology—that wins. Such are the opening lines of a story about an aggressive global social media […]

In Undefined Media, a Note on Vanguard’s Approach

With a blend of new and old models, we seek the truth

Richard Edelman, CEO and president of the world’s largest private PR firm, Edelman, issued a letter in mid-November (2016) that resonated with Vanguard staff. I was honored to be the subject of an article. I enjoy reading Vanguard articles and seeing how other attorneys got to their positions and see their jobs. It's also interesting to see how different law firms partner with the subjects of the articles.
– Henry Marquard, in-house counsel, Stanley Consultants Inc.
The piece highlighting my company, Bob Baker Enterprises, Inc., came out fabulous. Our company is in the new and used car sales and service industry. Everyone was great to work with and extremely professional. They produced a high-quality product and have provided expert assistance and guidance post-production of the article.
– Wade Poulson, General Counsel, Bob Baker Enterprises Inc.
It was a great honor to be featured in Vanguard Law. Working with every member of the team, from the initial interview with Erin Clark, through production with Victor Martins, writing the article with Taryn Plumb and creating the final content with Dave Gushee, was a true pleasure. Everyone was very professional, enthusiastic and supportive, and their creative approach and positive attitude clearly came through in the final product.
– Kevin C. Rakowski, Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Compliance with Radian Group Inc.
As promised in advance, my feature in Vanguard has increased my visibility within the profession and prompted more than a few people I have not communicated with recently to reconnect. One of the Italian law firms I have used in the past is now in the process of interviewing me for an article on their website and tweeting out the feature story. Activity and the number of people connecting with me on LinkedIn has soared, which is great. The Vanguard writers and editorial staff were great to work with—highly professional and made the effort to make the experience both fun and rewarding (they were also respectful of the time pressures and demands all lawyers face). I was very pleased with the experience and the final outcome. Needless to say, I have been very pleased. All in all working with Vanguard has been a very positive experience which generated good publicity for both Shawcor and myself. My sincere thanks.
– Tim Hutzul, General Counsel, ShawCor Ltd.
